Default Engine turns off while driving

93 Si AT 225K Southern CA

Last week my engine turned off 2 minutes after I left my driveway and I was unable to restart it. Did the check engine light code check and it passed. I then found there was no spark was coming out of the coil while trying to start the engine. Frustrated I let the car sit until yesterday when I tried to turn it on. Coincidently? the battery drained and it was unable to hold a charge so I tried starting the car with the help of a battery charger. Miraculously it turned on with no problems and I drove it for about 30 miles throughout the day and every time I wanted to restart the engine it did with no problems. Last week when I also attempted to start the engine with the battery charger attached it did not start.

Yesterday I replaced the battery and fuel filter to be on the safe side. I measured 12.5V at the battery and 14V when the engine is on. I loosened the service bolt on the fuel filter and plenty of fuel comes out when I try to start the car. I had replaced the main relay, ignition coil, spark plugs, wires, cap/rotor in the past 6 months and the ignition a couple of years ago. Fast-forward to today I turned on the engine in the morning and it died after 10 seconds and I was unable to restart it.

The only thing that stands out is the 5 yr old battery died as did possibly the lights that illuminate the temperature controls on the center console. My aftermarket car stereo has been turning off and on for a second or two almost on a daily basis for the past year but I’ve had my system for close to 10 years so the problem could be that the head unit is old.

Like I mentioned I've had this car for a while and I just need it to work for another 4 months until I start a better paying job so any help would be much appreciated.

1 thing is that if you have a 5 year old battery.. it's time to replace it.. 2nd.. if your car wont stay on.. you also might have a problem with your alternator.. that would be the first thing i would check

SO it sounds like you have the worst problem of all. It being intermitten. Sounds like you have a bad coonection/rotten wires somewhere.

If the coil seems to be where the problem starts, check the wiring to the coil.

This happened to my lude, check the ignition wires, I had MSD ignition and it sometimes poped off and would turn the car off while I was driving, I replaced the wires and it hasn't happened since.

I would also say the alt, but i guess what happened when it died. where your lights on, did you lose your speedo? thats what happened to my car, you could jump it and depending drive for a length of time.

Prolly not the alt because I was able to drive it for two days after it initially refused to start and the battery is still good. The car turns over strong but I am now hearing a subtle high pitched whine when it tries to turn over. I replaced the 02 within the last couple of years and those symptoms were completely different then what I have now. #3 post makes a lot of sense and I'm leaning in that direction.

It could be the harness that plugs into the back of the ignition cylinder. I have seen it happen to several Hondas. Very common problem. You can probably pick one up from a junk yard for the low low. Or just buy one from Honda, you know your getting a good one then.

I had something like that happen to mine a while back, it was the ignition switch causing the problem.
