You should use a good synthetic grease on the inner lip of the seal where it rides the camshaft, so that the seal doesn't burn when you first start up and no oil is there yet.

They sit all the way back into a recess, so you really can't push them in too far...

Hylomar grease if you can find it. Wipe the area down with brake cleaner first and put some on the camshaft and the inner lip of the seal. They should sit slightly recessed.

I think they only fit in one position along the cam cap. I usually install cam seals with Hondabond to, which helps prevent leaking.

hmmm so did you grease them also ? Where did you apply the hondabond ?

I still dont really know how far back they should go. Should I just push them as far as i can ? Obviously without forcing them or distorting the seal.

As someone has already stated, they come with grease on them from the factory. If you're reusing them, then regrease them, if they're new, they already have grease on them. Make sense?

Well, there are only two surfaces in contact with anything. The OD contacts the head, and the ID contacts the cam. Take a wild guess on which surface the Hondabond goes. Hint: It's not the surface that seals something that's rotating!

Are we reading the same posts?

Have you bothered to actually look at the cam cap and head with the seal installed? It's not like you have to press the seal in since the cam cap comes off the head. My guess is that you haven't even bothered to look at the damn thing. Look at it and study it, then get back to us if you still don't understand what to do.

I really don't mind helping people, but I really feel that you're in over your head if you can't see how to install the cam seals. Are you actually building this engine yourself without any supervision?

Sounds like somebody needs a hug and a turkey sandwich

OP:

That is all the helms says about installing them. When they normally go into pages of detail on everything but leave one sentence for this, it has got to be very simple.

I'm all for helping people, but this is getting a little ridiculous. Not the question, but the fact that he gets 3 or 4 fairly clear answers and either doesn't believe them or just doesn't understand!
