Re: best vtec for my honda prelude $$$
Ok, it is just that question of vtec and which one is best. The answer to that would be the one that fits your specific motor. Vtec all have the same concept, they are not interchangeable.
VTEC ( Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control)) is a valvetrain system developed by Honda to improve the volumetric efficiency of a four-stroke internal combustion engine. The VTEC system uses two camshaft profiles and hydraulically selects between profiles. It was invented by Honda engineer Ikuo Kajitani, and was the first system of its kind.
The problem with the lude is not the motor but the weight. Take that same motor and put it in a 92-95 civic and it will beat most V8. I have a gsr swap with nothing but bolt ons in my 94 hatch and it can run with 370z, e46, beat z-28 on slicks while I was on street tires.
You are going to spend a ton to build it up naturally aspirated and see very little gain power wise. I would build the motor for boost. You will get alot more gain for a lot less.

Re: best vtec for my honda prelude $$$
The best VTEC honda makes is a J37A8, just under 300hp stock.
The best Vtec Honda makes that is drop inable in your car is an H22a Sir S, it makes 220 hp.
Te best thing for you to do to your car, would be to research which is what and how each swap would change in installation or parts.
I think you asked a very open ended question, perhaps you can specify what "best vtec" you are talking about. Best in power, best in economy, best is swap easability. there are allot of bests out there.

If that shocks you, check out Bisimoto Engineering. There's a lot of +/- about him on these boards, but the guy puts out pretty impressive numbers. We're talking 600-700whp out of a SOHC 1.6 or 2.2L.
The problem is that what I think you are looking for is the low-end grunt of a V8, but you're just not really going to get it out of these little Honda motors. VTEC-based motors will give you the horsepower once you get up in the RPM range, but you're talking about a screamer and not something that's fast off the line.
Best bang for the buck considering what you are looking for would probably be a supercharged H22, but honestly a S/C H23 would probably do fine. For more grunt bore and stroke them out, and get some custom cams built around better low/mid-range torque.

Re: best vtec for my honda prelude $$$
H22A swap with b4 Tranny (Lsd) is the best for your car, not to many mods needed, you can keep you power steering and AC, and use the car as a Daily, I kill some V8 with mine,i killed a 03 Mach1 02 Mustang GT, and a 2010 mustang GT like for 5 cars, just saying
