Dude, I thought my Prelude handled so good on stock susp, and it did. But after I got new springs and shocks, it has yet broken the tires loose on a turn. The suspension is one really good reason to but a Prelude, but so is an H22, and plus it's just hands down a hot car.

let me just say this, my second car was a 96 S model with an auto and i got in a LOT of trouble with that car. if your 15, and you are serious about getting a prelude then just do everyone a favor and dont be a typical 15 year old ***** and street race everyone you see with it. the real world does not work like the fast and the furious, people get tickets, get theyre licenses revoked, get in accidents and get killed and kill others when they street race. cops have zero tolerance for youngsters flying around in hondas and it only makes insurance rates higher for the rest of us. modifying a car is alot of fun, and is encouraged as it keeps our sport alive and i commend for you considering a 4th gen for your first car, most 15 year olds jump on the civic bandwagon. but if you want to race, do it legally, find a dragstrip.

im sorry to preach, but take the words of wisdom from someone older than you who nearly lost his life at your age due to street racing, thanks

i doubt an american motor would last that long given the same beating.
get a 5th gen if you look in the right places you can find one that's relatively cheap. but opt for the stick. 5g auto tranny = POS!
good luck.
just don't rice it out!

Your better off prob just buyn a clean title clean lude. You might have to pick up one with higher miles on it if you were looking in the 4th gen price range. I would say you can pick up a 5th gen from anywhere from $6500 - $7500 in decent condition. Those would usualy be the higher mile ones.

Yea i think i Prelude is great for a first car. Its been my first car for a couple years now. Insurance is kind of expensive for me (no tickets, hits or anything, also on my dads plan, but he does have tickets and a fender bender, but also has the multiple car discount because my older sister is on his plan as well). The body had 144k miles when i bought it, but was in great condition. I got lucky that it had an H22a swap and was the VTEC model with leather, because i didnt really know much about Preludes when i got mine. I was looking for a 5th gen at first, then i saw my 4th gen for sale and got it. I like everything about it. Ive only had a few small problems with my car (new suspension, new brake pads, new clutch), no engine problems though. Everyone thinks the digital gauges are cool too. It just drives great in everyway. I think a lowered Prelude with some aftermarket wheels is one of the best looking cars. I say go for it. Its also a car you dont see all the time everywhere like most other Hondas.

I've probably own and operated every honda ever made even the first generation prelude up to an 2002 NSX. I say, For a noobie, get anything with a Dual Cam, DOHC. SOHC just Sucks.

TOP cars for under $5,000: OVERALL:

1. DC2-INTEGRA LS/RS/GS (just because it's a B series easy parts and mods)
2. PRELUDE H23/H22 (I got one) Cuzz people want $5k + for a GSR
3. EG CIVIC HATCH si / HX/ VX (Just a classic they should call it OG6)
4. CRX SI (Cardboard box with Potential)
5. S13 240SX KA24DE (RWD, SR20det possility, "wow, drift" wooti doo.

and a 5 or 6 speed tranny, anything less would be Uncivilized.

We had a green one of those at the Honda dealership I used to work at, perfect condition. We would all stand around and wonder how fast it would be with a k20, at least the mechanics did, the car salesmen knew nothing about cars.

My old 4th gen Si with the F22 trans made better gas mileage than my 2001 corolla CE. no lies.

haha...i have to agree to that. The Interior and dash really speaks out. The 4th gens have a really nice body style. Loved it ever since i first laid eyes on one back in 1992. Performance parts are hard to find at times...but hey, not everybody has a souped up 4th gen lude anymore.

Yeah man get an S, that's what I have sure, you may think slow, and not vtec, but the car is fun to drive, get jdm parts, and then if you really want extra hp, you can turbo the F22

My thoughts as a 4th gen prelude S owner:

I bought this car simply because I saw it had 190 horse power on a comparison sheet I had put together on autotrader with diffeent cars in my price range and it had the most horsepower... in my defense I was still in highschool and at the time I knew nothing about cars.

So I figured the "s" stood for "type s" just like the rsx and had to be the fast one. So I bought a S (base model) used with 95k miles on it. It was black on black and had 130hp of sohc meagerness.

After driving this car for almost five years now I have learned to do everythign from a break, air filter and oil change to just last week pulling the engine. Things will need to be replaced on a 4th gen just give it a year or so. And usually things like to break right after you just spent all the $ you had saved up on wheels/ tires or some ugly *** ebay tail lights. so get a job and a helm's manule

I did eventually go for the jdm h22 swap, and that engine put up with alot of abuse/ boarderline neglect for 3 years and has now spun a bearing.

the engine bay in the 4th gen has too much crap in it imo, and i have spent hours upon hours figuring which vacume hose went where

but unless mommy and daddy have deep pockets, which probly isnt the case since ur looking at 4th gen preludes, be prepared to get a job and learn how to work on your car.

that aside: thier fun to drive, the interior kicks the **** out of the civic and integra, seats especially and lets see how should I put this to a 15 yearold...?

ItZ g0t VtEc Y0!

j/k good luck in the car search and gratz on ur liscensce

the 4th gen is a great learners car. I learned how to change oil up to swapping trannies.

I would not have dared touch a brand spanking new 06 civic or 01 prelude or the like.
