Is 3500 rpm to high for Prelude 98 in 5th gear
This is a question on my friends 98 Prelude. I want to know if driving in 5th gear at 120 km/hr (74 miles/hr), whether it is normal for the engine to be revving at 3500 rpm.
I know the Prelude is a high revving car but I think the 3500 rpm is too high. My friend is one of those guys who bought the car but does not know anything about cars in general.

thats normal.
RPM is governed by the transmission so its not like the engine can be wherever it wants at a given MPH/gear.

alright thanks, ill check the VIN here in a few minutes. does having an H23 really make that much of a difference compared to an h22 trans? is the gearing vastly different? i checked the ratio's but that means nothing to me because i dont understand it. thanks guys

h23 has longer gears
h22 has shorter gears for faster acceleration
Both have same final drive

Im sure there is, Ive only had the h23 tranny so, far. Looking to upgrade before the end of the year. Supposedly, its faster acceleration and easier to do burnouts.

ok, well from what i can see someone ripped off the code off of the tranny. i dont know whether to blame the shop, or what happened, but i still cant tell. bottom line, is there any way that a 5th gen tranny should be running at 4000 rpms at 102 mph? thanks. again.

The M2S4 transmission has the same final drive as H22 transmissions. The M2S4 also shares the same 5th gear ratio as many H22 transmissions, although not the M2F4's.

Go out and hold the car at a certain RPM and note the speed, then use some mad algebra skillz to solve for your final drive. Maybe you can find which tranny matches up.
