this is kinda like trying to survive a shark attack: you don't have to swim faster than the shark, just swim faster than at least one other person.
If you make your bike harder to steal than at least one other bike nearby, chances are that yours will be left alone...
But that's about the only use of an alarm, chain, handgun, etc. If a thief notices your bike and REALLY wants it, it WILL be gone.

i agree to a certain extent, most people's bike's get stolen cause of careless mistakes. i've never heard of a story where some thief went through extensive lengths to steal a bike. it's usually just sitting there unattended. lift move drop gone. never heard anyone cut through chains, bypass alarms. etc.. find me one thread/article where someone went through loops and i'll change my whole view.

Speaking of all this, what do some of you guys do when you go somewhere like lets say walmart or somewhere that you are going to park your bike for a while unattended?
Do you just hope for the best? Don't ever take it places like this? Chain it to something or what? Just wondering?

I own a triumph, I don't set foot in walmart.
I also didn't buy a sportbike to commute, if I wanted something to commute on, I'd buy a scooter.

mine, and my brothers sleeps in my cargo trailer, which also serves as a mobile garage.
its close enough that if someone tries to get in it, i can shoot them through the window of the camper
you will have to excuse the "posed" tire, it was for comparison purposes...

rolls eyes. Your title really does seem to fit.
I lost a bike to theft 4 1/2 years ago. It is a shitty feeling.

so you live in a camper?</TD></TR></TABLE>Yes, but only when I am away from home working. My dad and I do pipeline work. We have a 35ft 5th wheel travel trailer that we use when we need to, and that is what I am living right now. So yes, at the moment I live in a travel trailer. Nothing wrong with that IMO. It beats the hell out of the Super 8 motel I lived in from Oct 17, 2007 - March 30, 2008.

i hear ya, i respect constructive criticism, isn't that what forums are about? i'm not trying to be hard headed, or sound like a broken record. i'm only naive cause i've never heard of a bike getting stolen that had adequate security. seems like an urban legend. "if they really want it they'll steal it" i hear about cars getting stolen all day, but bikes that are locked up never... myth busters... proof, proof, proof...

I'm thinking i might be stuck getting a storage unit close to home.
I'm to scared it will be stolen.
but i guess in the long run it's worth it since i'll need one for the winter since i live in new england.
