Default Registering my bike in California

Hey guys, I am moving to the Bay Area, specifically around San Jose soon!

I know I can bring my vehicles if they have more than 7000 miles on them, but i have modified my FJR significantly, but I have done NOTHING to the engine/emissions. Can you tell me how comprehensive the CA inspection/registration process is and if they will not allow me to get my bike legal?

Basically I ripped off the fairing and added my own mirrors and turn signals.

I moved to CA and just registered my 636, they don't check emissions on bikes, they just look it over and make sure the VIN is correct and look at the engine number

yea, its a 20 or 25 question written test to get your permit, its common sense stuff though if you've ridden for awhile but I'd look over their study book a little..I don't have my licsence yet but I've seen other people getting theirs and they had to do a couple turns around some cones and that was pretty much it

Turns around some cones? Then it's changed since I took the MSF...at the DMV, you were supposed to navigate a keyhole-shape without passing over lines, putting feet down, etc.

As for the 7k mile thing, that's only an issue if the bike is sold to a new owner, right? I'm fuzzy on that detail though.

It does look like the bike needs 7000 or 7500 miles on it to bring it in-state. The FJR is fine with 9900. The ninja 250 has under 3000 miles yet. I think its staying here, even though it would be a fun runabout.

You're exempt from the 7500mi requirement since you're moving into the state. THe bike needs 7500+ only if you live in CA and are trying to buy a out of state bike.

Welcome to Norcal!

Congrats!! You'll love it on the west coast. The weather is awesome. It's better in SoCal though.

Generally...no. Something about insurance liability or whatever.

But if you get in good with the manager of the storage place, then he/she would probably let it slide.

Enclosed trailers pop up for a pretty good deal every now and then on Craigslist; that could be a possibility.

ok well the plan now is to aim for a duplex / something with an attached garage. if that doesnt happen then i'll get an apt + storage until i find something with a garage later on.

i dont recall if it is license or vehicle registration but there are additional cost penalties if you dont do it in 20 days.
