It all depends on what you want to do and what you are comfortable with. I race basicaly every weekend there is a race within 3 hours and I ride a 4 stroke. 4 strokes are usually ridden a gear higher than you would think and you lug them around. They make great torque, ride better in the mud, and don't foul spark plugs on the trail. 2 strokes generally have a very narrow powerband, meaning that you have to constantly change gears and be on the throttle to make good power. They are however much simpler in design and require very little maintenance other than changing rings/piston maybe once a season on a bike that isn't raced regularly. The 4 strokes don't require that much more maintenance but you have to keep an eye on valve clearances, and piston/ring changes are a little more involved because of the timing chain.

Most of my comments are regarding motocross style bikes like the CR,YZ,KX, RM (2 strokes) CRF,YZF,KXF,RMZ (4 strokes) vs trail style bikes like the XR's, TTR's...
In general the trail style bikes are heavier and offer a little less performance but require less maintenance.

Depends how you like your power delivery.

2-stroke is like a light switch. It's all power on or no power. There is hardly any inbetween.

4-strokes have a smooth wide powerband with tons of low end.
