i am in the market, i am about 6'0 170. I want to buy a decently fast, definately nice, overall good trail bike, im just looking to fool around, nothing serious

i want to spend in the area of 3000 new or slightly used, (i dont want a pos and nothing below 03) , what can you reccomend me?

i was looking at a new



honda crf230.

how is insuring one of these? worth it to buy new over slightly used?

I'm not too up on dirt bikes, but if you're going to be trail riding, get a 4-stroke. i.e. Honda or Yamaha 400. You should be able to find those in the $3000 range.

4 stroke
pros: no oil to mix in the gas. environmentally friendly.

Cons: need twice the motor to be equivalent to a 2 stoke.
More expensive to maintane then a 2 stroke.
Heavier then an equivalent 2 stroke

2 stoke
pros: Very few parts make up the motor, cheap to maintane.
Lots of power for a small motor.
excellent throttle response.

cons: Cost of 2 stroke oil
Not environmentaly friendly.

I'm biased towards the 2 stroke

A 230 4 stroke is a very little bike.
If you have any experience on a bike look into maybe a CR250.

All the newer 2 stokes have a power valve that pretty much give you instant powerband.

for someone with motorcycle experience I would say that a 250 four stroke motocross bike slightly used would be a good place to start. they have plenty of power, are light enough, and are forgiving enough to learn on. You should be able to find something decent in the 3000's. The ama is planning on passing a new fair class rule that effects the way these bikes will be classed for sanctioned racing and I think you will find that a lot of people will be dumping them for fairly cheap come january when the new rules actually take effect.

you can get electric start on some trail versions of the motocross bikes but the crf's, yzf's, rmz's, and kxf's will all be kick start. It really depends on what you are looking for performance wise. I prefer to sacrifice the convenience of electric start for the loss in wieght.

Id start off on the eletric start, it makes it so much easier when you stall on a steep hill

edit: just called my local powersports dealer, and they said they could sell me a 2006 CRF230F for 3000 straight up cash. not bad

uh. the dealer just told me 3k out the door for an 06 crf 230 ...

You may be happy with a crf230, it is a super reliable machine. Just be aware that you may outgrow it quickly if you plan on doing more than casual trail riding.

Wr250f, KTM 200EXC, Crf250x. The WR and CRF are the trail versions of their motocross equivalents and theyll give you a suspension thats more suited to trail riding, electric start, and a a front light. They might be just outside your budjet, but Id say itd be worth it in the long run.

Ls1 FD3s

the CRF line is the 4 stroke race bikes which started in 2004
CR is the 2 stroke race bikes which is current in all years. (hence the "R" at the end of CRF250R)
CRF line with the "X" at the end of the CC's number (IE CRF250X) is the enduro **** with headlight/tail lights speedometer which started in 2004 as well
the XR series is the enduro/trail **** line 2003 and older...

My suzuki is relisted on Egay, il take $2500, i just bought a 05 YZ250f and NEED ROOM!!!

no matter what dont buy an xr 400 i own one and they are crap. since new it has been very hard to start. bogs when you pin it, and last time it took me an hour to start it then the kick start snapped off. go with yamaha

Yamaha's racebikes (yz250f/yz450f) have Ti valves, which heat cycle and LOVE to break at any given moment unless you replace them by season or every 6 races. Honda runs stainless. i love honda's dirt scooters.. My CRF250r was the best MX bike i have ever bought. Starts soo easy for a 4 stroke race bike. Ive been through a TON of MX bikes to know all this too..
Yami's streetbikes however, havnt let me down yet. That YZ250f i jus bought has a smoked lower rod bearing. engine/bike is 100% stock

Yamaha actually has the most reliable 4 stroke race bikes out there. They've been in the game the longest. I'm not sure of their valve material but I know for a fact that honda runs Ti valves from the factory. Honda's valve reputation is probably the worst. They have a coating that wears off and requires re shimming of the valves on a regular basis. Check out thumpertalk.com and compare the yamaha valve related posts to the honda ones, I'm 100% sure that you will find way more honda ones than yamaha. All that being said, I wouldn't trade my CRF450 for anything.
