I'm really going to hate a 250 Ninja aren't I?
Well, I'm finally getting my endorsement (wanted to ever since I got my license, I'm 19 now) but my mom (still live at home, and will for another year at the least) has imposed some restrictions on the bike I'm allowed to get.
I told her from the beginning that I'd be getting a sport bike, just because I do not want a cruiser. I want something nible, agile, and somewhat quick.
I told her I was going to get a 600, because as said in here many times before they are the best starter bikes. I started explaining why the 600 would be the best, and she immediately shot me down.
She began by telling me that I don't need something that big, that I'm only allowed to get a 250 while I live at home. A 250 streetbike? What the hell is that? A 250 is a ******* toy.
I really don't know what to say to her. I told her that the smaller bike would be extremely hard to ride on the freeway since the wind would move it all over the place, but she seems to think that I'm only going to use this bike around town.
I don't know what I can say to her...I'm going to have my Aunt talk to her, and I was trying to get my stepdad to help, but he just seems to go along with whatever her opinion is.
How bad is the 250 really going to be? I've been on some enthusiest sites, and from them the 250 seems like the end-all-be-all when it comes to a sport bike.
I like the looks, I like the mpg, and I like the idea of being able to toss it into corners with ease, I'm just worried that it won't be able to handle the 65+ mph riding on the freeway...
Someone set my mind at ease or just tell me how shitty it's going to be
[/rant]

so go buy a 250 decal kit..then buy a 600 bike strip the stickers off the 600 apply the 250 stickers in the parking lot after you buy the bike and wala a 250 to your mom and a 600 to you ..thats what id do cause 250's suck ..600's own just make sure your mo dosent see you swap stickers

Re: I'm really going to hate a 250 Ninja aren't I? (Grip)
2 of my close friends bought bikes within 2 months of each other. The first one bought a used ninja, im not sure what it was, but it was either a 600 (or whatever the ninja is equvilent to a 600) or bigger. The other, bought a brand new off the floor 250. he bought it because it was cheap as hell, and the insurance was like ****** rediculously low on it. They rode together for about 2 months, and then Nick, the one with the 250 sold it. I talked to him a few days after he sold it, he told me that even accelerating to 65 when riding with Brad that he felt like he was in a horse wagon, and brad looked like he was in a ferrari. He got sick of playing chase everywhere they went.
I drove a yamaha 360 street/dirt bike for about 6 months, and that thing felt slow as **** to me.
I would do everything possible to get at least a 600, and if not, save up your money over the next year and buy a new one when you move out and skip the 250 experience totally.
Just my 2 cents bro.
good luck with whatever you choose.

Its not that bad on the freeways. Just stay away from the big semi's which you should do on any light street bike. If you want to learn to how to ride the twisties then with a 250 you should have a really good learning curve to step up later on. You can't beat the mileage if youre commuting a lot.

my hairdryer motor is about as big as that 250 ninja. If you feel like rolling around on a dirt road in the middle of asia with a basket on it get that bike, but don't be surpirsed when grandma on her huffy passes you. Don't waste your money, buy a 600 and learn there....why waste a couple grand when you don't need to

I disagree. Why get a 250?
1) Easier to learn throttle manipulation and conservation of momentum in turns with a 250.
2) Cheaper insurance.
3) Better gas mileage. I get about 40mpg, 30mpg in the canyons. I think 250s get almost 50...?
4) Better resale value - the 600 class is insane. The latest/greatest will be outclassed in a year, two tops. Which means the resale value of your bike drops a lot. The 250 class hardly has that problem. There's always a slew of new riders who want to start off on a 250, so you can always sell it to them. The percentage of loss you take on a 250 is small compared to a 600. So you're not really WASTING any money. The difference in prices for used bikes is less, so if you really want a 600, I suggest a CBR600 F2 or F3.

tell your mom-e that getting a 250cc bike is more dangerish b/c you will not respect the ''power'' that it has. and then 95% of people who buy 250 sell them the first year they have them. i bought my first bike last year and it a 89 katana 750 and it looks pretty nice and is as fast as i need to go.

LOL I was actually discussing that with my friend that wants me to start riding. He's got a Ducati 900.

That's what I'm looking for. I want something that I can learn on without having many hairy moments, and I want to be able to just throw it into corners and not have to worry about not being able to bring it back up.

I already have massive ammounts of fearful respect for bikes. My brother is in a wheel chair after an accident on a 600 Ninja.
I'm not looking at spending more than $1,500 for the 250. The only thing I'm down on is the power. I know after a week I'm going to want to go faster, but maybe that'll help me not be a skidmark lol.
After some thought today, I really feel like it won't let me down. It's rated at 14.6@88 from the factory, so I know it's not a speed demon.
I don't really expect to be chasing down any 600's, or really even racing the bike. I want the sportyness of a sports bike, but hella good gas mileage.
Thanks guys
Theres enough positive reinforcement that has brightened my mood
*edit* I'm not very good with carbs, and I know almost nothing about mechanicing on a bike, so I figure this will also help because 250 parts are cheap and everywhere lol. It'll also help me get expierence, so in the future when I want to get an R1, I can maintain it and work on it and not bugger stuff up.

I'll be paying for everything myself, as I always have...
There is nothing I can really compromise for. If I try to talk her into something bigger, she starts getting pissed. I think I'm going to just drop it and get the 250. If it starts feeling slow, I can always rejet and put and exhaust on it. If worse comes to worse, I can maybe stuff a 400cc motor in there

a 250 is gonna feel like it has NO ***** at all, i wrote a 250 during my motocycle safety course and it was pathetic...no pull at all, well not compaired to my ZX-7 anyway and it was by no means a FAST bike...it was fast...but not FAST....just my .02

Re: I'm really going to hate a 250 Ninja aren't I? (skud_dusty)
I would just go for the 250 but try to steel it real cheap from someone, find a good deal that u know u could break even or sell for more. That way even if u don't like it you won't lose any money, and when u move out get the bike u really want A bike is no reason to lose your bed, and FREE FOOD over. Gosh damn I love food.
ANYWAY good luck with that.

Too bad you're not old enough to have some good credit. I just went to the dealership alone and bought my R6 within a couple hours. Being delivered to my house on Tuesday and parents still don't know.
Look at it this way:
1. You'll have a bike
2. Your moms is giving the stamp of approval
3. If you don't **** up, she'll eventually let you upgrade
4. The learning curve isn't as harsh on a 250 as it would be on a 600
5. You'll have a bike

These were all facts that I was thinking about. I'm happy to be at least riding on a sport bike. That would suck if she made me get a cruiser lol.

My brother was being very ignorant when he wrecked. He didn't have his endorsement, hell, he'd never even ridden a streetbike till that day. He had ridden 125 2-strokes, but that's it, and never on pavement.
He says the last thing he remembers was coming out of a coner at 120+ and then everything goes black.
He was on a 95 Ninja 600.
I am more responsible, and actually have a fearful respect for bikes. I know what they can do, and sometimes it scares me. I'm not going to immediately go ***** out on something. I'm going to get a feel for it, and get used to how it reacts before I even go WOT.
But yeah, thanks for the comments guys, hopefully I'll have my bike before summer
Should be getting my endorsement in like 3 weeks

Re: (skud_dusty)
Skud, just get the Ninja 250. If you are not an experienced rider, it won't feel that slow. It's something you can learn on an be relatively safe. If you get a 600, there is enough power that if you accidently grab too much throttle it could spell trouble.
Ride the 250 around for a while, prove to your mom that you are a responsible rider and then move up.

Re: (Z)
I think you should already be counting your blessings because your moms is letting you get a bike. And since you are still under her roof, you should respect her decisions. It might not be worth the strife to go behind her back and get a 600, but that depends on how much longer you're going to stay there.
I'd start with a good, used 250 that you can probably sell back for close to what you got it for. If not for anything else, it will teach you how to ride and it does fulfull your criteria of "something nible, agile, and somewhat quick". And if the winds are strong enough, any bike can be affected...except maybe possibly a Goldwing 1800.
How about a two-stoke 250 like a NSR or TZR?
