my question is, was he really really fast?

Is leaning that much really the fastest way around a track?

why would the width of his rear tire have to do anything with his lean angle?

So if that guy spun the tire coming off the corner, wouldn't that make it easier for him to wipe out at that kind of angle?

i've seen guys scrape elbow before. they're fast but not unworldly fast. his body position makes it possible, which isn't necessarily the better than people that hang off less, per se.

i'm sure john hopkins could scrape lid if he wanted to, but it doesn't automatically mean he's faster than nicky, who rides more upright, if you will.

Well yes his body position is rather dramatic but the lean of the bike is nice too. Much faster than I either way.

It actually works the other way around. You proportionally lose grip in the front the bigger your rear tire is.

The wider the rar gets, the more it "props up" the front tire and shrinks it's contact patch. The reason tires get wider as bikes gain more power (see: small ninja tire, 140/150 on my DRZ, 160 on an SV, 180 on a 600, 190 on some liter bikes) is to accomodate a change in riding style to make the bike "go" faster. This is also part of the reason that wide tire kits, basically, suck.

On a bike with lots of power, the quickest way around a track is to get on the power in each turn as quickly as possible (generally speaking). However, on a bike with less power, you stand less to gain from getting on the gas quickly, vice carrying more corner speed. Therefore, they get a smaller back tire.
