Default CRF230F VS. CR250R

What are the differences in gear ratios, top speeds and power... Has anyone had any experience with either (the 2007 model) and what did they like/dislike about them?

I know there will be a big difference but is the 250R worth the extra $$ and maintenance?

thanks
shawn

I don't know about the gear ratio's, but I can tell you the CR250R is going to be far and away MUCH more powerful than the CRF230F. You DO realize that the CR is a 2-stroke motocross bike and the CRF is a 4-stroke trail/play bike?

It all depends on what you plan to do with it. If you are going to race, or plan to do some crazy jumping, you will definitely need more than the CRF. It's not really a fair comparison...they are designed for different purposes.
You might consider a CRF250R (4-stroke) as an alternative. It will be a little more friendly on trail riding than the CR250 and you can still take it to the track.

CR's for teh win.................much more powerful. but, it all depends on ur uses for the bike. the CRs will suck riding trails because of the gearing.......i might be missing some things....................

hey i work in honda dealer so i get to play with all the new bikes. the cr is a sweet bike on track like they say, but not so good on trail. the 230f is what i would get for tight in the woods riding and SHORT trips to local store. i would got 250 or 450 on track(still better than cr in on the trails). if your look for something in the middle look at the 150r it is alot faster than the 230 but still trailable. if you are looking for a comparable bike to your cr though go 250r

230 is a fun bike for trail riding, i rented one for a day while in costa rica. I was keeping up to the tour guide on a yz125 all day, and i'm 6'3 190. Could it used more power? oooh yea! But it was still a great bike to ride and i enjoyed it.

A 125 two stroke mxer is still gonna be alot quicker than the 230f. Get the cr250r and just take your time and get used to it. Better yet, crf250r for the better mix of what it seems like you want.

Thanks for the input. I ended up getting the CRF230F just to let you guys know.

It's cheaper + less maintenance + it is my first dirtbike...

I'm Picking it up Wednesday

If i really don't like it i'll probably just sell it and buy a different bike, but that comes later. First i have to wait for the snow to melt up here in canada.

I'm looking at dirtbikes right now myself. I actually haven't rode a bike in years and I'd like to get back into it. Something for riding in the pits/grid at the track and something I can take out to some trails and have some fun. I'm considering the CRF230F, CRF250X or something used. Some questions I have...

1) How much better is the 250X vs the 230F? Is it night and day difference? The price gap between the two is huge.
2) What year is the oldest you guys would go if I do buy used? I'm seeing '04 250Xs go for the $3500 range. Should I stay away from a used bike?

Is there anything else I should keep in mind or look for? The one dealership here offers dirtbikes at $100 over invoice. I'm assuming this is the best deal that I could probably get. Also, I'm 5'11" 215 lbs if that makes any difference.

Kick ***. Where abouts are you going to ride?

I picked up a 01 warrior(sport quad) last year but didn't get out much.

We have a few trails out there (I'm in Nebraska...lol). I have a friends' grandmas farm to go to as well. A couple buddies of mine have 650 cc ATVs and I could ride with them.

I found a couple used bikes on Craigslist that caught my attention. Both '04s. CR20R and CRF250X for $3500 each (different sellers). Blue book actually shows the CRF250X to be holding its value a little better...weird. How much different would an '04 bike compare to a newer '07 model? They look a lot alike which is a good thing. If you were willing to spend that much would you consider one of those used bikes or a new CRF230F instead?

I'm gonna jump in here too, if you all don't mind So based on all these posts, the CR250R is a motocross bike, and NOT trail friendly? This is good to know, as I was just looking at one for trail riding for my girlfriend. She's a total noob, and I'm just thinking low displacement (though 250cc 2-stroke did make me wonder...). I've been pointed towards an XR100 for her, any opinions? My budget is LOW, like $1000 or less.

Great, thanks! I have an XR250 for myself, but it's a little big for her. It's also been fiddled with a little, and might be a little too zippy.
