comment on ZX-10R and its ability to do 90+mph in 1st gear
1st gear is so tall on that bike so that people dont loop it, as only small increments to the throttle can cause the thing to wheelie in 1st with the short wheelbase and rev happy motor. its really closer to the ratio of a 2nd gear of most bikes, when considering overall engine to wheel speed ratio.
apparently the R1 is worse in this way, according to Motorcyclist magazine.
i know its fun to brag that your bike "does 100mph in 1st" to your buddies, but the reason why is because the engineers were trying to keep you from killing yourself on it, and i maintain its only breaking 90mph barely, not 100.

i dont see what the big deal is that it can do 100mph in first... If it prevents you from looping thats great...just seems like more people are trying to brag about its first gear speed and not even knowing its to prevent looping.

Its not like one riders better then the other i look at them as equal in rideing skills it was a good race... I'm still waitin to see what the new CBR is gonna do on the street havn't seen any on the street yet around me... but there now comp in the 1000 class like there is in the 600 class now....

I thought 1st gear was tall on the ZX-10R and new R1 so the rest of the gear ratios could be closer, making it perform better on a racetrack. Most race bikes have very tall 1st gears, as do most race cars.

I'm tired of this the new zx10r goes xxx in first. Is it that big of a deal? The bike has so much power you can loop it in first easily, beileve me. The busa weighs 100lbs more and comes up in 1st through 4th fairly easily. Bottom line is, speed limit is 65 on most highways, and 45 or less around towns... unless you're into breaking laws, u'll never go that fast. And if you go to a track, chances are there's someone faster on a similar bike ...

Good post Jake. I've met a few w/the 04 R1 (not including 2 close friends) and they are actually re-gearing that bike bc of the long gears. Best mod to do yet

i was wondering when a post about this was going to come up. who really does care about how fast it can go in first gear, what matters is how good u are at riding the bike, like in the twisties, not how fast it can go. dont get me wrong though, i do like the way the 10R feels weight wise, havent had a chance to ride one though.

I could give two ***** how Fats you can go in 1st gear...The things that do matter are Power to weight Ratio, And thats where the ZX10R Shines!

Re: comment on ZX-10R and its ability to do 90+mph in 1st gear (97Civic-R)
Kawasaki's old ZX7-RR had a really high 1st gear. It was closer to what 3rd is on a normal transmission. A lot of guys bought these things for the street, and it turned out to be a big pain in the *** for most of them. The bike was meant for road racing, not the street. A regular ole ZX7R would have suited them better... but any thing for that extra 'R' eh?

If the ZX-10R will do 100mph in first, that automatically means it will do 200 in 2nd, 300 in 3rd, and so on.
Having a 600mph bike must be sweet for parking-lot racing.
