Default Battle of the street boots

I feel naked without my riding boots, but they are pretty tight, and have a little plastic spur right at the very top where my shin rubs, which has actually cut me after a day of walking around in them. They are size 6.5 (closeout), and even my tiny little feets get cramped when I wear anything but dress socks.

I also disdain black footwear - I only wear black shoes if I've got to wear a grey suit or grey slacks. I especially hate wearing black shoes with blue jeans - the DC club kid's outfit of choice.

So I found two pairs of boots that come in tan colors, kinda like the Timberland boots everyone rides in but shouldn't.

ICON Field Armor chukka boots:

ICON Super Duty boots:

Anyone have any experience or opinions on these? Kneedraggers has them within $8 of each other...so price isn't much of a concern. The Field Armor ones look to offer a little more protection, particularly in the heel.

i say super-dooty. (i said dooty. ) at this point, protection is probably like the 8 or so dollar difference. that it isnt going to be much of a difference between the two. and i think the dooties look better. the bike thing on the back of the field armors looks wierd.

<----- his $0.02

Ross, these boots do not address the most critical of areas, the ankle

I wear the Icon Motorhead boots. They are really sturdy, and have hard padding for the ankles. That was the area I was most worried about, so I opted to go with these. I dont care what they look like.

Oh and easy as expletive to get into...just 2 snaps.

Can you recommend some that do, that are also streetable/walkable and look somewhat like normal shoes?

Wearing my SIDIs actually discourages me from riding sometimes, unless I'm riding just to ride. Walking in them truly sucks.

Dang, just looked at them. A little too much for what I'm after here, but I appreciate your input. However, you could help me greatly if you told me what size you are wearing, and how it fits you.

ICON does not offer my size (7.5), so I am stuck between a 7 and an 8.

No such thing as negative input from you, Gramps It made me reconsider the path I was going down, a little bit.

Are you adamantly against black construction-type shoes, or black motorcycle-boots?

For the added protection motorcycle-boots give you, I'd gladly trade a little bit of comfort away. Have you tried a different brand of boots that don't cut into your shins?

Well, I'd like to avoid buying something that's too similar to what I have (SIDI Vertebra), or else what's the point? I want to make sure that if I'm spending more money, I'm going to wear it a lot and get my money's worth.

I like the boots that RJ has (A* S-MX Plus) in white, because when your pants are worn normally, they resemble white sneakers. Only problem is, they cost like $250. I'm not rolling in money (hence my $3K dog bike), and no one needs two pairs of racing boots.

Construction boots are probably not the answer, if you mean something like Timberland or Frye.

A bonus to the Field Armor chukka boots is the venting. They do cover the ankle to some degree, do they not? The only area of concern is protection. The price is right, and the looks and practicality are there.

The heel on those Icon FA boots looks pretty huge. Will it connect with your exhaust pipe?

It looks like your ankles would only be covered by the black padding. Have you had a chance to try these on?

The Duc has heelguards, so I'll be all right.

I haven't had a chance to try them on, and I don't know of any shops that stock them. For $80, I might be willing to risk it.

Ross you mentioned liking the A* SMX-Plus boots in white because they look like a sneaker.
Compared to the Sidis the SMX Plus boot sucks to walk around in. They squeek(SP) constantly so everyone knows you're wearing motorcycle boots. My friend and I met up at a restaraunt and ended up walking around to different stores and such and I didn't even know he was wearing his Sidis after a half hour of hanging out with him. If i had been wearing my A*s people two blocks away would have heard the noise.
Sidis are the best boots in my opinion. And if you get the non-corsas there's really nothing to putting them on.
I would never get either of the boots because
1. They're Icon, and Icon is crappy.
2. only "ganster" people wear Icon, or people who need to wear "hip-hop" clothing even while they ride.
3. Tan looks ugly, and it just doesn't look right unless i'm wearing a FUBU jersey
4. They don't really offer that much protection for the ol' ankles. I actually rolled my ankle in a pair of boots very similar to those
5. Might as well just wear timberlands cause they look the same, except for the pointless buckle that's going across the top.

Ross,

I currently wear some dark brown Asolo GTX hiking boots right now when I need to tote around town in somewhat comfortable shoes but offers protection. They are above the ankle, they are thick around the toes and provide a little protection to your shin. I paid $209 for my pair but right now it is serving as my hiking/riding boots. Double duty.

http://www.worldclassgear.com/...s.asp

"The 520's uppers are made of 2.6-2.8mm full-grain leather" I don't know how much abrasion resistance that is, but I know it is a little thicker than some or most leather jackets. Of course, not all leathers are created equal and stitched for abrasion resistance.

Not saying to get that one, but most hiking boots are built to withstand a bit of abrasion.

Interesting points. I think we can agree that the ankle protection will not be as good with the ICON boots as it would be with a full-on riding boot.

However, the SIDIs squeak like caged weasels when I walk around. Seems that your experience is different, but mine are hella loud!

The ICON stuff is a little on the homeboy side, but this is the only moderately priced boot in anything other than black that I was able to locate. The rest are black, and ugly. I do have a pair of brand-new Timberlands, but I have just outgrown them and they will be on eBay shortly. At least the Field Armor boots are designed with riders in mind.

I appreciate your input. Your attention to details, particularly the aesthetic variety, is among the best in this forum

Hmm. The heel on those boots looks like it might cause some problems with all the indentations in the sole (just the thing that makes them good hiking boots). Also, a bit pricey for this particular application.

Where did you read that?

The S-MX Plus are really nice, and if they weren't $250, I'd be all over them. I hate paying a ton of money for gear...

Dang dude, can't you read? I already have SIDI Vertebras, just looking for something a little more comfortable. I got them for $180 b/c they were a display model. That's why I hate paying full price for gear, because it's easy to get things on sale or get hookups at your local dealer.

I tried the Icon Superduty on at a local shop. They felt pretty comfortable and the ankle protection seemed sufficient. I'm actually thinking of getting some, myself. They only had brown, but I want black.
