Default 600CC too big for a beginner?

A little background about me, Ive been driving stick shift car for like a year or two , so might make hte change over process a little easier. Also the 600cc bike will be older (1992-1995) which i heard is a little weaker than the 600cc now adays

What do you think? STick with a 250cc like a ninja, or suck it up and get a 600cc (either katana or CBR not sure yet)

Before everyone else jumps down your throat and bursts thru your chest like ALIEN I'll point you to the sticky at the top of this forum:

Driving a stick shift will make you more familiar with the shifting aspect of a motorcycle, but even if you didn't, that process doesn't take very long at all.

And definitely read that sticky post. It's long and may be hard to take it all in one swallow, but there's some great info in there.

600cc will be fine if the head on your shoulders is mature enough for it.

My first bike ever is a 99' R6 and i havent had any problems whatsoever...but i ride it with more respect than you can imagine.

Like they said. If you're mature and take things one step at a time, you'll be okay. If you're like half the newbs out there thinking they pwn cuz they got a bike, you'll probably learn respect for the throttle the hard way.

I know a few guys that have never crashed and they've been riding for 10+ years on the streets. They ride cautiously but over time, they've learned to be fast and smooth w/o all the drama.

The real question is not "is this bike to big for me?" but "am I too big for this bike?"

Look past the spoon.

god...not another one of these threads

the risk is higher to start on a 600cc but it is possible (decide for yourself on what would be best for you) read the faq's for beginners and try to do a little research

I've said it so many times that demanding the 250cc be a starter or even the 500 is retarded. 650 hands down 110% is the best starter bike. You don't want a bike that's gonna hurt you if you slip up just a little. something more forgiving is what you want. Most 600 supersports aren't like that.

Exactly why the 250 is ideal. Plus, the initial purchase price is a LOT cheaper and the resale value is awesome. Laying down a 250 is far less expensive, as well.

IMO, i think it helps significantly with understanding how the clutch works and that its not an ON/OFF switch. At least thats what I observed at my MSF course with the several people who had never driven a stick who we a LOT worse than the rest of us. my opinion, the 250s look like ***. and so do the 500s. as much as anyone wants to deny, looks do matter. that said, an older 600 is not a bad choice. As everyone else said, respect the bike and fear cagers (like me ) or at least thats what ive heard so far

You're 22, I would hope you are mature enough to start on a SV650.

Just get a ZX-12R. You'll outgrow a 600 fast. Remember, twice the cc's means twice the fun!
