Default Pirus vs. Honda Fit in terms of economy daily....

Curious topic I've been thinking over....

We just got bak from Toyota dealer and a well setup Prius will cost close to $30k!

Given the new ones do not have the HOV sticker for carpool usage, that kinda defeats the main purpose I like the Prius.

So is the 45mpg+ worth spending the extra money? What do you guys get for mpg on the Fit?

I prefer a normal gas powered car but my girl really loves this hybrid concept.

Both cars have great space for 5 and lotsa hatchback cargo space....

let me hear your opinions!

Some of the users here have gotten more than 50MPG with their Fit (You can read their discussion in the economy link). I like the hybrid as well, but the Prius was just too expensive for me. My Fit gets me over 40+MPG with conservative driving, best i have gotten in the past was 45, more or less. I recently installed a Fujita cold air intake, and it seems to be helpful so far as far as fuel consumption goes.

If Honda made a Fit Hybrid, i'd buy it.

I've gotten anywhere from 34-42 in mixed driving, but never touched 50.

also keep in mind that sd has a lot of hills, hills are enemies for those wanting higher mpg.

I have gotten as high as 65.1 mpg as a tank average over 624 miles.

Getting around 50 mpg is easy so long as you slow down and inflate your tires to the max sidewall pressure.

That advice should be followed up. Inflating the tires to max pressure, will result in less even tire wear, and increased braking distances, due to the decreased contact patch size.

I'm all for increasing mileage, but not at the cost of safety. Overinflate tires at your own risk, and know the potential consequences.

I wish people would stop posting hypermiling MPG's. That's not real. That's MPG + drivers responsibly or irresponsibly turning off the engine, disabling various safety features. I wish people would just post straight up MPG figures. Or at least specify that they were hypermiling.

Spend the extra money? No. MPG? You should be able to get 40 mpg, plus or minus, with normal conservative driving. Edit: with a manual transmission. Can not comment on fuel economy with the automatic.

Space? To me, the Fit is a great deal better than the Prius in hatchback utility. Honda carried the roof line back farther, making the Fit much better for large bulky items.

Yeah I'd say the Fit has MUCH more cargo room, and the Fit also has the 'tall-mode' for carrying tall things.

Kind of OT: I tried to cram my mountain bike into the 'tall mode' configuration, no such luck. Honda must have used a kid's bike in their ad.

For real? What size is your bike? I'd really like to be able to fit my road and mtn bike in. I ride a 57cm road bike and a 18-19" mtn bike.

Did you have your seat post all the way down? Both wheels off?

Well it's Honda who made the ad for a fully assembled MTB. I did fit it by just folding the rear seats down the regular way, it fit no problem without taking wheels of or anything, although lowering the seat post helps, and taking the front wheel off makes it even easier. I hate racks, they have a negative effect on MPG, and can dent/scratch the car.

My dad got back from ADK, he got 43.4mpg, it was pretty cold there so I'm sure that played a factor.

I guess you're right, out of all the different configurations of bike racks, I think the hitch kind is the best, seems the sturdiest and least likely to damage the car's body. My brother's old van has two dents on the trunk where he puts his regular-style rack. His MPV is a total beast, it can haul 5 people and their bikes no problem: 2 bikes inside, 3 out back.

Like I said above, getting ~50 mpg in the Fit is easy. If going the miniumum speed limit is considered hypermiling, then so be it. There is nothing irresponsible about driving slowly and within parameters of what is legal.

If one was to drive 10-15 mph below the speed limit (which is legal in CA, and many others as well) on the freeway, have the tires filled to the sidewall max, and accelerate slowly; that is 50+ mpg easy.

more than 50 is bullshit...even above 40 is pretty damn hard to reach even if you are on the freeways

that's not true at ALL.... you just have to be willing to drive 50-55mph on the highway

i commute 125miles per day, ~88% of that is with the cruise set at 75mph. i get 35mpg average. which is just fine for me. when i drop the speed to 68mph, i get 40mpg.

do the math. a prius is damn near $28k. you can get an '09 sport MT for $18k.

you'd have to drive quite a bit. if you drive 30k miles a year and if gas is $5.20/gallon then the prius and fit cost the same. but with fuel currently at ~2.60, you'd have to drive 60k miles per year before the prius costs less.

that's not even considering the high insurance rates for prius' given the retardedly high cost of replacement parts and their availability.

one thing i think you should do: go and drive a Fit... for a half-hour straight at a minimum. make sure it's comfortable for you. IMO, the Fit's seating position is akward at best. in fact... i think it's HORRIBLE. do NOT get a model without cruise control. TRUST ME.

Myself, the wife, and 3 kids weigh a combined total of 775 pounds. Add several hundred pounds of luggage, laptops, stroller, cooler, etc, and I loaded the Fit out with over 1000 pounds of stuff and people. On a 600 mile trip to SC from KY, I averaged 38mpg just by driving the speed limit or slightly less. On the return trip I hauled *** most of the way and still got 36 mpg.

On a normal tank with just me in the car, 40 is easy. My best tank to date was 49.6, with another 47mpg tank somewhere in the mix. I'm averaging better than 40 mpg by just driving slowly and not hauling *** everywhere I go. Try rolling into and out of stop lights instead of putting the pedal to the floor, and keep the speed at or below the speed limit. It isn't even remotely close to being fun but it does save gas.

On Topic: I can't see the additional expense for the Prius. For that kind of money one could get a Civic or Mazda3 that gets almost the same mileage as the Fit and still have money left over, or possibly even an Accord or Mazda5 (if you want to haul stuff around, too). Until or unless Toyota lowers the price of the Prius by a good $7,000 or more, it's just not worth the extra money for such a small difference in FE, IMHO.

Plus, the Prius just looks fugly to me.

actually, the prius is worth it if you do a ton of city ONLY driving. that's where a hybrid will beat a gas car.

That is a pretty ignorant statement.

My best tank average was 65.8 mpg over 612 miles. I did have to drive slow, pulse and glide, and shut my engine off and coast down hills.

My current tank should be 57 to 60 mpg, and all I am doing is driving 50-52 mph on the freeway, and driving 35-40 mph on the side streets (posted 45-50 speed limit), and shutting my car off at long lights. This requires little effort to achieve, but you must be patient. I drive ~65 miles per day, and the drive time is not really that different from when I drove faster.

I think its the accelerator pedal positioning more so than the seating. I agree, Cruise control is worth its weight in gold on this car. I wish the options on the Fit were available seperately: I don't need alloy wheels, the side sills and lip, or even power windows/mirrors/locks/AC. I do like the MP3 capability stereo on the Sport and the cruise control.

even after installing cruise, i still have knee pain

the pedal positioning relative to the seating is all wrong. that's what i meant by "seating position"

Oh I see. Come to think of it, my knee also hurt pretty bad after a 4 hour drive.

It's a good thing I use the Fit almost exclusively around town for short trips. I must say, it excels at the task. 35+ mpg for all city driving, especially up and down the hills where I live is pretty impressive IMO.

Cmon lady, don't be so rude, keep the thread clean.... Anyhow, your method of achieving 65.8mpg is unrealistic for day to day use. Are you Fred Flinstonein' it? If I drove my CRX like you laid out should I expect 80 mpg?
