Oil life monitor
How many of you are changing the oil by the monitor? I've always been a 3K mile oil changing guy since forever-ago but is it really needed? I may be a bit old school but it's kinda hard for me to let oil go much longer than 4K at the most, especially if the motor has a timing chain. A friend of mine has an 08 SI that showed the oil life at 62% @ 2,650 miles. If my assumption is right that would put the next O/C at or around 7,500 to 8K miles give or take a few percent.
I'm wondering if oil viscosity really last that long and we've bought into a lie just to keep buying more oil.

Your oil will last for much longer than 3,000 miles.
My light recently came on at 6,100 miles
I'm sure Honda doesn't want everyone's engines to blow up so why would they tell you to do something that would destroy your engine?

I wouldn't say it was a deliberate lie in order to get us to purchase more oil, but, I wouldn't rule it out either. LOL
For my daily driven Fit I use the maint. minder system.
I don't follow it w/ my S2000 because I put it through some different conditions.

Just took this from a website doing a test on M1:
Engine wear actually decreases as oil ages. This has also been substantiated in testing conducted by Ford Motor Co. and ConocoPhillips, and reported in SAE Technical Paper 2003-01-3119. What this means is that compulsive oil changers are actually causing more engine wear than the people who let their engine's oil get some age on it.

Re: (LSVTEC 91 Civic)
regardless of the age of the oil and how long u can go before its is deemed not good for the enginr, the oil gets dirty and dirt builds up in the engine...
...im not sure if i believe that changing your oil often is actually doing damage to the engine, id need to see some pretty serious test results for that...
...im gonna change my oil tomorrow at 1033 miles to get the break in engine oil out and put in fresh clean oil in then i will continue to change every 3k miles once again to keep the engine/oil cleaner then usuall...
just my thought process... i guess we will have to bring this thread back from the dead years from now when are engines are pushing 150-200k miles to see whos engine lasts the longest with least amount of repair needed to really see what is best...

waste waste waste.
If Honda wanted you to take out "break in" engine oil they would tell you so at the dealership when you buy a car. The fact is this is such a myth yet everyone still believes they need to take out that first engine oil.
I went over 6k miles on the oil that came in both of my Fits. And to change every 3k miles is unnecessary. But, if you would like to spend an excess of your money, feel free.

Re: (SuzukaBlueAP2)
i work at honda and the training modules show all techs for oil life on new cars with maintenance reminders to put a sticker on the for a date of the next three months or 15 percent oil life......I myself have always changed my oil around the 3k mark. But now im going to change mine when it says 15 percent. I see mostly everyone following the 15 percent thing as the cars come in the lowest i have seen is 5 percent come in to the shop

15% will always be different. I got to 15% at 6000 miles but some might get there way before or way after. Depends on how you drive.
I just changed my oil today. Thank god I only have to do this every 6000miles +

correct the maintenance reminder comes on at 15% and varies on how the driver drives, it means the driver should get the oil change really soon, but in fact you can go to zero percent with out major harm(i dont advise this) as soon as you go past that it will start reading a negative mileage for how long you drove past due maintenance.
I have seen several cars that come in and have this....its ok once or twice but after several times it could cause potential harm to your engine.
Please don't go by mileage for the newer Hondas to change oil, Honda clearly advises all their techs to not issue a mileage due on the stickers they put in cars because that the percentage of oil life varies the way you drive so unless you have OCD or your race car needs an oil change every 3k.....dont your wasting oil and money and just change your oil when it hits 15 percent

Re: (jrzy2nR)
I can agree with this but for me I use my DD for work and it gets thrashed pretty hard in Alabama heat. It may be running as much as 8 to 11 hrs at a time. So I change oil between 3K & 3.5K. So far so good with 233K on an SR20.

I'm going to guess that there's something different about a new honda engine and an SR20 since Honda recommends you change your oil so less often than older cars.
I'd like to know whats so different, though.

SR20DE? SR20DET?
There would be a huge difference because the more heat generated by the turbo might break down the oil and shorten its life.

even in my 98 Civic I would go 5k miles or so before doing an oil change.

yea a sr20 motor compared to honda motors is different indeed and not to mention if you have that motor dont tell me you dont drive like a grandma
