Default Mods/mpg

Can basic bolt on mods (intake, header, cat-bnack exhaust etc) help MPG if driven nicely?

You might benefit from a K&N drop-in filter.

That's prob. it. A tube intake, header and/or exhaust is probably going to cost you mpg but will provide some minimal HP gains.

well after thinking about it, i think its only common sense that move air requires more fuel. man its gunna be hard trying not to modify this thing.

so far i think the only mods that can help my MPG are CF hood, Hatch, lighter wheels, and smaller battery. So pretty much lighten it up.

Just to let you know, since I dropped in my KN filter, I have noticed a nice little increase in MPG on the freeway in my Fit.

These are what I have documented since the past 6 tanks of gas, buying gas at the same place (Costco) and measuring 9.3 gallons to 9.6 gallons per fillup, all on 87 octane gas.

With the stock air filter, I was getting only 34 to 35 MPG documented with a conservative driving below 3000 rpm with 9.6 gallons per fill up. (this was with 3 tanks of gas)

With the KN drop in filter on 9.3 gallons of gas (2 tanks so far), I documented 38- 39 MPG with the same conservative driving and the same route too and from work. Looks like this last tank might break into the 40 MPG area!!

Now this is not scientific at all, but what I have seen and measured myself. Seems like this was the best $35 I have spent on a filter in a long time... I wonder if my Mugen wind deflectors have anything to do with it also?...

lol. cool #'s. but i think wind deflectors would only increase drag. i have the CDM bug deflector and JDM thin wind deflectors on my fit, but haven't noticed any difference in mileage

I am always more than a bit sceptical when I read of these claims. Do you really think Honda and all their engineers could not figure out by using a different air filter the MPG would increase by ten percent or more? If so, you have never had a business relationship with Japanese auto companies. They are frugal and deadly in their goals and means to get them. I am not saying you are wrong here, just thinking it is not logical is all. I worked in the automotive parts industry in Japan for nearly a decade, I know for a fact if you can come up with an idea which is as impacting as this, Honda will pay you millions for the use.

I need to change my air filter this month, we will see if I have the same experience. If so, I shall be calling a contact in Honda with my observations. Needless to say I expect no real impact in changing an air filter.

In the meantime, keep us updated on your MPG.

And don't take this the wrong way, but, do you honestly think Honda (or any manufacturer for that matter) actually builds a car that can be no better once is rolls out of their factory? I don't think so.

They know there are compromises to be made and parts of the vehicle that are not economically efficient for them to spend more $$ for R&D because there are other aftermarket companies that fill this void.

That's what I think at least. Maybe I'm way off base.

Well, thank you for your opinion, but I never stated I was a supplier/nut swinger for KN. I just simply put what I have noticed just by dropping in that filter and using the same gas and driving the same way to work in the same manner.

I always think that auto manufacturers do one thing, they are out to make a buck. Do I really think that Honda spent so much money on R&D on an airfilter to extract HP and fuel economy from an economy car? Probably not in my opinion. It's a mass produced item that is cheaper to make themselves than to outsource it, especially to an American company. Isn't Tokyo's economy been in a downward slide for the past 10 years? So much for Japanese banks helping out bankrupt Japanese shell companies to try and fake the image of a "good" economy. Is the KN filter a better filter? I think so and for a massive $35, my dumb American *** will continue to think so and enjoy my better gas mileage. I know I hated paying 150 yen a liter for gas when I was in Japan for the past 3 years, but I sure am glad I am home to pay those prices over here...

UPDATE ON KN FILTER:

9.3 Gallons of Costco gas= 376.5 miles (light came on) = about 40.3 MPG

This was after 3 tanks of gas and the car has about 4600 miles on it.

I finally broke 40 MPG!!

4600? I remember those days. It took me about 2 months

After 15 months, I'm at 30k

shouldn't help mileage at all. if anything, your mileage will drop. more "cold" air = more fuel.

hot air>cold air as far as fuel economy

As everyone has said, I think with a full CAI you will loose MPG, a drop in is going to be your best bet. A lot of it comes down to the "driver mod"... how you drive

I will never ever use K&N again in any of my vehicles. More air flow claimed by K&N = more dirt entering the engine. No way around it. OEM filters the best.

HHmmm funny.. well I have never had a problem with any KN filter I have ever owned in any of my cars. I had one in my S2000, my Civic, my Fit, my wife's RSX, my old CRX Si and even my '85 Camaro (first car). No problems at all even on my 200k mile Civic..

Well, at about 2 months since new and I'm at about 15,000 miles.
Average of about 32mpg stock.
But OMG, I let m 19 year old son drive it and it dropped to 23mpg,
and he just drove maybe 1/2 tank each time!

LOTS has to do with the driving habits.
And lots with the locale.
Here on So Cal you get run over if you're not doing 80-85 on many freeways.
I'm sure I'd do a LOT better if I could drive at 60-65.

My old Astro got 14-16, but guys claimed over 20,
And then I find they're somewhere where they drive 50-55 all the time.

Well, maybe a lighter foot is much better than any mods you can make.

I've had it in my 3 Integras (LS x 2, ITR), S2000, BMW E30, 4Runner, etc. UOA showed more rapid wear. Changed to OEM, and performed normal. Prove to me that K&N filters just as well, but can magically allow more air in.
