saving my first CR-V: 2000 -5speed with blown motor
This is going to be my first Cr-V, a 2000 with the 5speed manual trans
its a auction car, auction description was clean title, primary damage hail. secondary unknown, start code was won't start
Bid based off pictures, have been bidding on quite a few for about 7 months now.
Had the car shipped here.
Motor has a hole.
Have another motor located, that is supposedly known good.
What is the best way to pull my motor, top or out the bottom, and along those lines, keep the trans connected or no?
pics. probably not worth saving the car, its not great, has 198k but no rust.
it was definitely not well cared for like i was hoping
started a gofundme page for what the engine is going to be….
headliner is a mess, the previous owner CUT the driver front carpet out, etc. Just dirty all around.
reply with thoughts on how to pull the motor, etc. I do have a cherry picker I bought a few years back. I do have jacks and tall good jackstands…
I bought this car to replace my 04 outback I sold late winter. Owned Honda since 1993

this is about my 13th or 14th Honda since 1993, have NEVER had to mess with an engine aside from timing belt replacements, plugs, ignitors and the every 3k mile oil change. I do all my own work

First challenge is complete, here is the replacement engine I went 4.5 hours each way (left at 10AM got back at 8:15PM) to get. Guy had it hanging off a tree limb, chain and come along wrapped in a tarp.

My friend came over and brought some heavy duty tools and got my crank pulleys loose on both engines.
I resealed the oil pan on good engine tonight, the ultra grey is curing for the night. Also pulled all the intake wires and motor harness off the sensors of the good engine.
I have a clutch pilot bearing on order. Valve cover gasket kit new sitting ready to go too.
Chiltons manual on the way for some TQ specs.
Hope that I can get old engine harness unplugged and pull the accessories off. At that point I hope my friend will help me pull out the motor that has hole in it. Set the new one in. Then I can work on getting it plugged in and then set the valve clearances.
Slowing me down is the daily rain and storms. Got 3 inches rain in the past 24 hours. Also slowing me down is a Jerk on Ebay who bought something I sold, and I don't offer returns and it says no returns on my description, now there is a hold on my bank account paypal transfer and my bank is overdrawn cause I tried to pay my ebay fees and the jerk has initiated a return.

if you have a laptop/tablet/pc you can google for a "97-00 honda crv factory service manual" and you can find a PDF version. you'll be able to search in that document for whatever part you're looking for instead of turning pages of a book.

motor is out. left the 5spd in, pulled it out the top.
Here are some pics of it coming out, and my friend helped me and used some of his tools too.
Most of the motor mounts are junk/toast. Have never used 3m window weld, but apparently even putting new moutns in won't last, so what is the best way to fix the junk ones? who makes the stuff that lasts, is it 3m or some other brand?
Also, the clutch is definitely not new. Not sure what a new one has for material, I may just throw this one back in but debating a new exedy or LUKS kit…..might leave it as it and see how long it will last me.
tomorrow its power wash the engine bay, and mow the yard and think about next steps.

new motor is in and it moved under own power/new heart tonight. comparison to Subaru…..Subaru is easy pie to work on, not sure why the Honda is so utterly ridiculous. I can pull and install a motor in a Subaru in about 8 hours, Honda took more like 20hours. Lots of brakcets etc. Subaru, 4 bolts to bellhousing and 2 motor mounts. Honda, lost track of bellhousing bolt count, transfer case to block, and the 5 motor mounts.
got an O2 sensor code and think the tps sensor is different from an auto engine which i put in, vs the original manual trans engine. They are physically differently made parts on a looksie comparison, might have to swap that.

adjusted the valves, torqued the crank pulley, new valve cover gasket and grommits.
and now have the header pipe out waiting on a new O2 sensor.
here is the new engine in a somewhat cleaned engine bay. The new motor came from an automatic, it was bought new one owner and then lightly crashed the side into a ditch at 168k. So my CR-V shows 198 on the odo, the new motor has 168k/
looked up part numbers IACV (idle air control valve) different auto vs manual, so swapped those around from my original motor.
new motor had T-belt replaced 40k ago at a Honda dealer. should be a good heart from what I can see in all aspects.

got a chance to get to the Junkyard in KC yesterday, as they had a 99 cr-v listed.
It was a 5spd, someone had gotten the engine and harness already, and it had begun its carnage, but the stuff i needed was mostly there. worth the 4 hours there and 4 hours back.
I got quite a bit of needed stuff. Driver side front carpet, and a oem well used driver cr-v floormat, backseat oem floor mat like new, couldn't locate the passenger side. **If anyone has just a passenger side oem mat, let me know….thanks
Got a battery hold down, and the battery box surround plastic.
Got the factory tool kit with lug, and prop piece for the back gate, and bag.
Good used left tailight (mine had a small crack and was condensating)
misc trim and clips, fasteners including the cowl clips and windshield fasteners, and rocker clips mine was mia.
Clock, but it is dead too, i tried to solder it. Anyhow, I do have my original clock working at the time now…
spare tire cover oem, it is pretty crusty dried/toasted but does work for now
pads for the clutch and brake pedals.
and finally, got the rear left shock plastic cover for the rear cargo area.
I have spent some time cleaning up the headliner and it looks much fresher. Replaced the bulbs in the climate control so now they light too. The center backlight for the tach is out, the needle is not lit the correct way, so going to get that fixed tomorrow.
Then, maybe some fresh fluids for the rear diff

put some insurance on it.
FINALLY got my instrument lighting fixed, 2 times had it out, then I found the 2 top bullbs seen here: they were both burned out….not now.
probably driven about 25 miles or so at this point.
anyone have a pair of front OEM splash guards willing to pass along?

did 135 miles roundtrip in it Tuesday.
Front lower control arm bushings are bad, where the strut mounts, not the swing arm back bushing but the one where the strut bolt goes thru.
Anybody have good source for new bushings?

The Poor BRAT, yet another winter it will have to sit out, and I need to put the BRAT Cap on it before the leaves start to come off trees.
found parking spots for 4 in the garage again, but it's pretty tight

got my CV boot and paint touchup this week
The other day I dremel cleaned some of the chips and scrapes, then filled them in.
We got 1.5 inches of rain so time to test out the capability on a mud road. rather disappointed, nothing like the old Subarus I have had. An old ditch my BRAT and Outback would easily walk up out of, this thing just stopped and that was all she could do.
Today I used Mequiars clearcoat safe rubbing compound on most of the car after a wash followed by a coat of wax.
Think i will maybe just sell it. got my eyes on another project and i can always drive the svx for the first part of winter, although that is what i got this for lol
Need to put the boot on and the lower bushings for the struts, the bushings aren't here yet.
