Loose Gas Cap or EVAP Leak?

Loose Gas Cap or EVAP Leak?
Hi there everyone. My sister has a 2013 CR-V and she perplexed me with a bit of a (I believe) Honda specific question that got me trying to understand how the EVAP system works on her SUV.
I've always driven GM's so most of my experience is as such. She called me last night to say her 'check gas cap' light was on. She said it was on even weeks after she bought a new gas cap (she bought OEM just to be sure). Given that all my experience is GM I was thinking something like the purge solenoid, but then she explained that her 'check gas cap' light is not the CEL. I presume that there is still a CEL available for a bad purge valve, right?
So, can someone give me the ELI5 version of how her CR-V is smart enough to tell the difference between a leak at the gas cap versus a failed open purge valve, or for that matter, any other EVAP leak?
I understand how EVAP systems work, unless that is, Honda does it completely different than GM and I'm missing a greater understanding of how her system operates.
I've fixed things on cars I never would have thought I'm capable of thanks to the insightfulness of my GM forums so I figured this would be my quickest resolution to a solid answer. Thanks for any insight you all can offer!
