Default just bought it and it's misfiring

My wife and I bought a 1998 crv with 200000 miles just over a week ago. We put nearly 400 miles on it and its run great the entire time... Until today... She put about 30 miles on it today with no problem then came home for a few minutes then went out to get gas and the car started to hesitate a lot and seemed to misfire. I took it around the block to see what was happening and it seemed to lose power from about 1000 rpm until 2900 rpm then it would drive better. It also has a slight hissing sound coming from the engine bay somewhere. From what I read online it sounds like its either the cat or valves need to be adjusted. I haven't done anything to it sense I bought it other than put gas in it. Does anyone have any ideas? Please and thank you

Any check engine lights? A legit misfire would throw a code as to which cylinder is the culprit.

First easy place to check is the spark plugs and gap. At 200k, there is a good chance they are in need of replacement if they were done at the proper intervals previously.

Second would be to check the distributor rotor. The B series engine is pretty good at eating those up. This could lead to a weak spark, which in turn runs badly.

Third, yet very important, would be to check the valve clearances. Over time, the CR-V has its valve clearances tighten up, which can lead to poor fuel economy and a bad running engine. If it is neglected too long it can start to burn the valves. The clearances should be checked every 30k miles or so. A properly adjust B series sounds like a nice quiet sewing machine.

Hope this info helps you track down your issue!

At 200k miles there are a lot of things you should replace. I bought mine at 214k, and have replaced at least the following items below.

Things that a fairly easy to do at home:

- Spark plugs (buy NGK brand, they are OEM spec'd and gapped right out of the box.)
- Spark plug wires (again, buy NGK brand, if not, I am running Import Direct's from O'Reilly's and they are OEM spec as well and have been doing just fine for close to 10k miles. Rumour has it, to never buy Bosch parts for Hondas) - if you do this at home, replace 1 wire at a time, otherwise you run the risk of putting them back wrong. (which will def screw things up)
- Air filter

If you're not a gearhead, then a mechanic should do these:

- Distributor cap & rotor (fairly easy for a gearhead, but if you're not comfortable working on engines, you should def have a mechanic do it.)
- Fuel filter
- Timing belt, water pump, and tensioner (definitely want a mechanic to do this if you're not a gear head). This will cost you around $600-800. The repair is quoted at 4 hours of work plus parts. Even tho it will only take about 2 for an experienced mechanic. You will still be charged for 4. A timing belt kit from Gates (includes belt, water pump, and tensioner) costs around $50-70
- New brake pads and rotors (if you experience a noticeable shake while driving & braking around 50+ MPH)

Also, something I keep forgetting to do, is have your Idle air control valve cleaned.

If you notice your ride is a bit rough (more rougher than usual, even tho Hondas are not Cadillacs), you may want to check into replacing struts and coil springs. When I bought mine, the front right coil spring was completely broken.

And let's not forget, oil change.

And I just re-read your post. If you hear a hissing sound, that may be a good indicator that one of your Vacuum hoses has cracked, which would cause a rough running engine. So check all your hoses, including radiator and coolant hoses, for any dry-rots or cracks. If this has never been done, it's almost gauranteed these hoses are completely worn out.

Ah thats a really important one I missed! Vacuum leaks could describe exactly what is happening to you. Also check the PCV valve and all it's connecting hoses. They are a maintenance item that are almost never replaced. It's that little black plastic elbow to the right of the oil fill cap with a rubber hose coming out of it.

So I checked for leaks and I couldn't find and. I also took a picture and a video that I'll add and see if that might help. Here they are

So up and to the left of the oil cap there is a small amount of smoke that I can see only with a flashlight.

Forget tackling all the tune up stuff first! Take 5 minutes and do a compression test to verify the valves and mechanical integrity is ok. Once this is done you can move onto to ignition parts inspection. Throwing a bunch of parts on it right off the rip is not necessary.

Well I did them all last night and it seems to be driving great so far. The plugs had really big gaps so I'm guessing that was part of it.
