WTF was honda thinking?!?!
I went to drop my g/f off at school and turned the car off and the car didn't start back up. All the lights would come on but it wouldnt even attempt to turn over. I replaced the starter which was $80 and my cold cranking amps on my battery was a lil low so I bought a new batter for $56. Put it all in and still wouldnt turn over.
Looked through the book and checked everything it said to look at and still nothing, finally searched H-T and it turns out it was the clutch switch.
Why in the hell would honda put a plastic piece there that breaks easily when they could just have it solid metal? The plastic pieces have served no purpose but to **** me off.
I knew the brake switch had the plastic thing that broke easily because my Accord did it, had no clue that the clutch had one too.

Re: WTF was honda thinking?!?! (Project91Hatch)
I don't know if this is intentional or not, but my fiance's 87 CRX Si doesn't need the clutch pressed to start. Perhaps it's possible to just remove the need for the clutch switch all together.... or hook it up to a button for extra security.

So you got pissed because a clutch switch broke after 15 years of use, and costs about 15-20 bucks to fix. Your right though Honda is dumb, im sure you could get a great deal on a 15 year old chevy to drive around

uh.. yea, $5,000 thats nothing for a car company..
oh, and it lasted 15 years.. FIFTEEN YEARS!!
thats about 12 years longer than they cared if it lasted!! (through the factory warranty!)

this happened to me once, but I knew what it was the next morning when I actually looke dat it. I did a rolling start to get it going the night it happened to me.
Just remove the switch and splice the wires to it together and VOILA! no need to press the clutch in to start. Also makes it possible to install remote start on your manual honda

Its your fault for throwing parts and money at the car without trying to diagnose it. Starters and batteries are incredibly easy to troubleshoot. If you're incapable of testing them, your local chain parts store will do it free. Next time take it to a mechanic and save yourself some money.
And yes you can easily bypass the switch.

Actually, most 88s did not have that switch either. My little hatch is a perfect example, and I have driven several other types of the 88 Civic/CRX family and it was all the same. I believe it all started with the late production 88 models and up. If you have an early production 88, you may also have 87 seats and strange interior parts. Gotta love Honda and their old model hold-overs! I have found that the switch is a PITA occasionally, but I would rather have it than not.
Project91Hatch, yes, it did cost you some time and cash with unnecessary repairs, but think of it this way you have less to repair in the future!

Honda was thinking that if the car had a problem, it would be properly diagnosed by a qualified mechanic.

i like the clutch switch, because we have an automatic too, and i sometimes space out and forget that the CRX is manual --and in gear--then-- when i turn the key i don't lurch CRX into the back of the delsol.... they put that safety interlock for people like me

It wasn't the switch if you could read correctly, it was the stopper that the switch hits on the clutch pedal. It probably cost honda more to drill that hole out and put the plastic piece in it than it would have just to leave it solid.

I did diagnose the problems, and fixed them. The starter was going to go soon, the batteries cold cranking amps was down so it could of used replacing so I did.
The thing that pissed me off is that I was stuck somewhere and couldn't get the car started to get it back home because of a little ******* plastic piece that serves no purpose other than to break.

i thought about why they bothered with such an extra piece, that when it fails, leaves the car unoperable, or what its even for. i tihnk the simple answer is that they just wanted to cushion the impact of pedal releasing. hindsight is that the rubber piece should have been added to the sensor side of things.

Maybe if it was a scamming POS dealer that didn't care about the customers. And before anyone says that every dealer is like that, think about it. The dealer is directly associated with the manufacturer. Therefore, they are held to very high standards of customer service. Some Joe Schmoe shop has no loyalties like that, and can get away with whatever they want. This is not to say that there are no good independant shops, or that every dealer is 100% honest. But as a rule, dealerships do NOT make **** up to charge more money, there's too many people involved in the process, a checks and balances sort of thing.

Well I know of a great shop in Charlotte that is 100% honest with everyone. That is just they way they are. HondaWorks has never ripped anyone off and they bend over backwards for there customers. I would rather go there then some overprices dealership that moves cars through like a heard of cattle. I'm sure there are som good dealership out there but that is MHO.

Re: WTF was honda thinking?!?! (Project91Hatch)
They did it because it was cool.
In all fairness, I also threw money($15, big roller) on what I believed to be a dead starter also(and probably was because it was showing other symptoms), same solution. Instead of shelling out the money for the plastic piece, I just used a similiar size screw and and nut. The only problem I forsee is that the constant smashing of metal onto plastic plunger will evidentally break the plunger.
I'll burn that bridge when I cross it.
