wtf does this happen?
when i start my car, if i turn the key and let the fuel pump pressurize before i start the car (wait till CEL turns off) it takes a good few cranks for the car to start. but, if i just hop in and crank the car straight over it starts up instantly on the first crank (without letting the pump pressurize before cranking it). why does this happen?

Not that I've ever encountered the problem personally, but from what you said, it might be something worth checking out if it bugs you that much.
It would make sense that if a couple of injectors were leaking it could cause the car to flood a bit before starting, requiring a few more cranks to fire.
