whistle at low RPM from Intake
I just bought a ghetto intake from EBAY for like 30 bucks....I know they will not be quite as nice sounding as an AEM, but I noticed a low whistle when you step on the gas...it goes away once you reach higher rpms to the typical intake sound. I was wondering if this whistle is normal or if there could be a possible manufacturing defect since I never had this with my other WAI or CAI I have had in the past? However, they were all on nissans and this is a honda. Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: whistle at low RPM from Intake (buckwilly)
my brother's ITR does it w/ his AEM CAI, and my friend's ITR does it with his DC sports short ram. it is just a resonant frequency that is created inside the perfectly smooth tube. it only will happen when the engine is sucking in a certain amount of air. like when u whistle, it only makes a noise when u are blowing the right amount of air. why doesn't your stock intake do it, cuz it's got ridges which disrupts the air flow. if your stock intake was perfectly smooth on the inside, then every person who bought a honda would be coming back to the dealership asking what's wrong with their car. so if u want the added HP from an intake, you'll just have to deal with the whistle. hope this helps

Re: whistle at low RPM from Intake (hybrid hatchback)
That is what I figured. Its funny though because my sentra se-r has a Stillen CAI and it doesnt do it at all...maybe its because of the Trust exhuast and headers or something...but I have never heard that whistle. It doesnt really bother me, just curious if it was normal. Thanks guys.

Re: whistle at low RPM from Intake (buckwilly)
I think the whistle is ACTUALLY from the throttle body. Cause I have the stock plastic intake on my car with the K&N square filter, all that is removed is the airbox and front intake tube. I still have the same whistle I had before even with an aftermarket intake. It's probably caused by carbon build-up.

Re: whistle at low RPM from Intake (buckwilly)
I'm glad you asked this question, I put an Ebay Intake on my hatch at the same time as I did an MPFI swap. I've been pulling my hair out because I thought the whistle was a vaccum leak!
One thing I noticed about my whistle though, It doesn't seem to mater what the rpms are, It always whistles at 1/3 throttle. Let off a little, it goes away. Give it a little more, it goes away.
Edit: I just realized, when I first completed my swap, I didn't have the ebay intake yet, I cut my stock intake tube down to about 5"long and stuck a cone filter on it (homade "shorty" intake) It whistled then too.

Re: whistle at low RPM from Intake (thumpu77)
Whew! I'm glad i'm not the only one that has this. My whistle is SOO annoying... When I bought the car, the guy already had a CAI on it, and it would whistle in every gear w/ the right amount of gas. I thought there was a hole in the filter, so I got my friends filter, now it only does it in 2nd and on w/ the right amount of gas. But if it is the TB, what can I do to make it go away? How do i clean it out, with just a regular rag or something? I'll try to disassemble (sp?) my intake tomorrow and see what I can do.

Don't worry about the sound dude. It's normal. I've had 2 different AEM cold air inatakes on 2 different cars. Both of them do the whislting.

Put your old intake back on and see if the sound comes back. If it doesn't...then you know its your ebay one.
Then look to see if there's one of these attached to it:

Re: whistle at low RPM from Intake (EF'n Fast)
well, I think I was gonna clean my TB anyways to see if it could be that since it never has been cleaned anyhow. Whistling sucks...honda's suck. J/K...but seriously, never had this problem with my Nissan se-r. Would a CAI do the same thing? Or would breaking up the tub into two pieces through a CAI to the bumper lessen that whistle...anyone with a CAI still have the whistle? Or is this WAI prone?

Re: whistle at low RPM from Intake (Infinity_Racer)
Hey guys, I cured my whistle!!!!
I had a side problem with my car, It was idling really low (apx 500 rpm).
Well yesterday I decided to adjust my idle up to 800 rpm and when I did, the whistle was gone!!!

Re: whistle at low RPM from Intake (coldfiremx)
I ended up getting sick of the whistling, tried EVERYTHING...even warped the cylinder shape to try to get rid of the noise, still nothing. So i just put the stock airbox back on. oh well. At least I got my se-r.
