UKDM Cluster into 89 DX
Ok guys, I have searched through a ton of old threads concerning this. A lot of the links are dead, as well as pictures of the pin wires are "red boxed". So please be easy on me, I know that this has been brought up more than a few times. If I missed something in an old thread forgive me.
So far from what I have read, is that I can get a 90-91 USDM cluster, and transplant the UKDM internals into the USDM cluster, and then I would need to wire the cluster to the car like a 91 cluster swap... whew, did that make sense? haha
Anyways has anyone actually done this? Is it proven to work? I would reeeeally hate to buy a 90-91 USDM cluster just to find out it is a no go. The UKDM was already expensive enough...
Also I read that I will need the 90-91 rounded cluster shroud, and brackets, and possibly a hazard switch? Also, I think it takes a mechanical cable speed sensor? Does anyone sell these for the 155mph speedo? I saw a link to a site that use to sell them in an old thread but the site is no longer.
Anyways this is the cluster I bought (On its way from England as I type this).

155mph speedo
Any up to date advice or instructions would be super helpful.

Re: UKDM Cluster into 89 DX
Alright, so my research continues...
I found this link that actually worked. I think it is the schematics for an 88 CRX HF.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2f...Dkw/view?pli=1
Does the 88 CRX HF have the same wiring as a 89 civic DX? If so then this should get me pretty close, as far as wiring goes.
Still not sure how to do the VSS...I heard something about using a 92+ civic VSS (electronic) ? Not 100% sure yet.

Wiring should be available in the FSM if you can find PDFs.
I have the tach and speedo in my '91 Si; swapped the units into the USDM housing so no wiring for me. That said, I haven't swapped the gas gauge or the temp gauge... so my needles are mismatched.

Re: UKDM Cluster into 89 DX
I am under the impression I will have to do some bit of wiring regardless, as I am switching from 88-89 > 90-91 cluster. I think the year ranges have different wiring. So If I put the guts of the UKDM into a USDM 91, I will still need to wire it.
Does your USDM Si VSS work properly with the 155mph speedo? does it read accurately? are the Cable VSS the same and the cluster is what changes the calibration?

Any reason you decided not to swap the temp/gas gauge?

It isn't an Si VSS anymore, it's a DA USDM VSS for a YS1 trans, and yes it works fine. "Accurately" might be an overstatement but it's within 5 mph up to 100, and that's more an issue with my wheelsize than anything else.
I will tell you that the tach sucks at the moment (gets jittery past 6k), but judging by all the sooty crap on the trip odometer I think the cluster I bought was in a car that had a fire. May just be a distributor/ground issue anyway.
Cable VSS I think are the same but the gearing in the trans may be different depending on car it came out of. Could be wrong here.

Re: UKDM Cluster into 89 DX
Well i just picked up the cluster today from Fedex. It has some silver plate/cover inside on the gauge face. How do I take off the lense to remove it? I need to clean this thing anyways.
Is the lense glued on?

Re: UKDM Cluster into 89 DX
There is 4 to 5 tabs around the clear cover that hold it in. I think 5 in the UK. Press the top first then the bottom. The cover should come off. I am guessing the AL plate is just taped or glued inside there on the face. My UK gauges just plugged in and worked.... For a while. Now they don't. I am hoping it is a fuse. Not whatever the hell your talking about.

It's an old thread I know, but I'm about to take on the same task and wondered how it worked out? Did you have to do anything more than what you had already stated? I've got the info on rewiring from 91 to 89. I know I need to get a 90-91 Si cluster and swap the gauges out of the UKDM cluster over. I'm still reading but I'm not sure if there is a difference in a 90-91 CRX Si and a 90-91 Civic Si cluster.

Re: UKDM Cluster into 89 DX
i have an 88 and tried a 91 cluster in mine, it was a NO GO.
they are not even similar. on a CRX I guess the hood is removable, so you can swap the hood over from a 90-91. but the dash on my civic is all one piece so there was no swapping anything over. i ended up sourcing a 88-89 cluster out of germany.
the euro wiring is also way different, so I had to repin my original wiring for everything to work somewhat right. I have gels like a choke light and stuff that doesn't make sense for a north american car, but I wired the choke light to be my check engine light. and there is no dimming ability on a european cluster.
