Default Super Clean 91 CRX: Total Paint Correction

This is my dad's super clean 91 CRX Si with 116k miles on it. He's the second owner and acquired it in 2000 from the original owner. At the time the car had around 90k miles on it.

The paint had never been which meant it needed some attention.

On to the pictures!

The paint was corrected with a combination of pads and meguiars m105 and m205. In most places, I was able to get 80-90% correction with m205 and a green pad. In a few areas I used m105 with yellow pad before switching to m205 with green pad. Overall, the paint turned out really nice and really transformed the car.

And on to the finished results.

Car was finished with Blackfire Wet Diamond Sealant. Given time constraints, I was unable to put wax on top of the sealant. Interior was given 303 aerospace protectant.

overall, I think the car looks great for being an all original rust free CRX Si w/ 116k miles.

Interior is all there and is in excellent shape. My dad purchased the car with damaged driver side panel and has another mint condition door panel...but has debated switching them because he's been trying to keep the car 100% stock.

I also didn't have time to detail the engine. As stated earlier, its 100% original. For those who notice the missing battery tie down, the battery was on charge and it just hadn't been reinstalled.

Very clean!

What did you use to restore the black molding on the exterior of the doors?

"Trim Kote" from detail king.

I don't normally recommend detail king, but its a good product and shouldn't be confused with a product like mothers "back to black." Water based, lasts a long time (12+ months) and is easily to apply.

Its beautiful man! If you only knew the things I would do to get my hands on an all stock crx si or even civic si. It 10/10 condition. Or at least 8/10? lol.

Eve 11 years ago, it was a great p/u. When i bought the 89 Si i still own back in 1996, i had to look hard to find a decent clean one. Your car looks to be in great shape

Any reason why you don'd like mothers back to black? I've been trying to use it on my beater and the moldings are so messed up it lasts literally minutes before it's faded/oxidized again. Wondering if detail king would work better or if I should just repaint them all with trim paint?

I don't dislike mothers back to black. In fact, I use it sometimes as an alternative to trim kote or 303 aerospace protectant.

Back to black just doesn't last and isn't a viable product if you're looking for a semi permanent solution. It is a great product to make black plastic look good for a short period of time.

303 aerospace protectant has a UV rating and will help keep plastics from fading as quickly.

Trim Kote is the ONLY product I've used which works well for months. Its not easy to apply and its time consuming. It also washes away if it comes in contact with any type of petroleum product because its water based.

However, under normal conditions it works amazingly well and I'm not one to ever compliment the folks at detail king because I think many of their products are overpriced and very average. Some of their heavier compounds are completely useless. They offer a polish and a wax that I do use.

Hope this helps...

I can post a picture of the original door panel. As stated earlier, my dad has another door panel for it...but has been reluctant to install it because its not original to the car.

Which is better in your opinion?

The original door panel with damage...or good condition door panel with no damage that isn't original to car?

The good panel....provided it's identical to the original. Some years are slightly different. My 89 Si doesn't have piping around the fabric portion. Many of the ones I've seen do.

With piping:

Nice work.
The original Rio Red paint is a single stage, meaning no clear coat.
It is a very soft paint as well.

Is the paint mostly original ?
I can see in some spots your dads crx has been repainted (overspray) though..

How are your pads now ? all red I bet...

Rob, the pads were not red when I was finished. One fender has been replaced and was wetsanded by a paint shop tech.

I don't believe this car had a single stage paint job originally...as the clear coat (which is visibly scratched in many of the pictures I took) was soft and pretty easy to work with.

Here are a few more pictures...

I took over 100 pictures total...with a few which show how damaged the clear coat was.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Rio Red has a clear coat. Mine peeled right of my hood every time it got wet.

Rio Red - R63 and Barbados Yellow - Y49 are both single stage paints for CRX.

Car looks very good. If I were you I would find some factory floormats and a crx armrest and call it good.

3m also makes one of the best over the counter products for trim... "trim black" lol. Awesome job on the cut and buff, depending on the depth of those swirls/scratches, you might be able to get them out with another compound...
