I know it sounds stupid but I am building a rock buggy using a 91 civic d16 and an auto transmission.So I need to lock the differential(the trans outputs become the drive lines for the front and rear toyota axles),does anyone make a spool or should I just weld it??

i have no idea what your asking for, but it looks like an interesting project

edit: do you think an auto honda tranny will stand up to the stress of rock climbing?

im pretty positive you have to weld it. I had a 91 crx d15 auto and it was limited slip. both tires spun the same way when you jack it up and spin them. or when i turned the 75 shot of nitrous on.

They always do that. Doesn't mean it's a limited slip.

BTW: that looks like a D15, not D16.

Unless it's a D16 w/ a DPFI mani on it.

hes kinda doing the same thing that another company did with a b20. you turn the engine sideways, essencially making the left and right drive shafts into front and rear drive shafts. so basically your turning the diff into a transfer case. heres the web site.

anyway, back to the question, no theres so spool for an auto d series trans nor any d series for that matter. you best bet would be to weld them since you want the front and rear so spin the same anyway. slipping, ie limited slip, would defet the purpose of having four wheel drive

Damn you should really use a 4 or 5 speed tranny with that project, then you be able to do a mpfi conversion and not have to worry about automatic wiring bullshit also would be much easier to weld up the diff and take alot more abuse.. D series manuel trans are almoust bulletproof

It possibly has some internal bullshit like the crv rear dif? Most non "locked, or LSD" fwd cars the tire with the least traction gets the power. Witch wasn't the case on the car i was refering to.

Hes looking for a spool, not an lsd. Phantom grip makes a spool, not sure if they have it for a dx trans though, you acutally might want to look into a d16a6 tranny because its shorter geared.

lets not give this guy any wrong info, if you know what he wants to build he is definitely going to want the auto tranny.

miller locker (weld it), they say the strongest way is to weld the back of the side gears to the carrier

what kind of rocks are you crawling over dont you need torque to 4 wheel which the d15 is lacking much of

dont forget the gear reduction it will have at the front and rear diffs, not like he is running stock honda gearing.

It'd be a fun little thing to rip around in, but you're right, rock crawling would be pushing it. Something that probably weighs less than 1000 lbs with 100 hp would be fun.

Actually since I am using two toyota front truck axles(for four wheel steering)that are geared 5.29 with the autos first gear ratio + its ring and pinion I will be close to 60 to 1 then figure in the mutiplication of the torque converter and you can double that #.I currently have a buggy that weights 3000 lbs makes about 200hp(4.3 v6)and it has more than enough power.This one is much smaller(chassis is only 100inches long,axles with wheels and tires are 76inches wide,and with 18 inches under the belly the over all height is 63 inches)so my target weight is 17-1800 lbs without me.

I know its a d15 its what I had around and since the mounts are the same for the d16 or the zc I would use it to mock it up!!!

and dont forget suzuki samurais on a good day make 60hp!!!

I figured I would weld it like this(usually how I do toy 3rds)weling the side gears to the case on a differential usually breaks in crawling.

I like it, good project. You could do a mpfi swap and run a turbo for real cheap. a t25 or 14b would spool real quick be real cheap and net you about 200 hp. Look me up on homemadeturbo.com if your interested and I will help you. (same user name) click my sig here for my shitty *** project
