I am trying to replace my speedometer cable in my 89 civic EF, I have the cable and housing all in place but just need to get it connected to the engine transmission.
Edit: when browsing the site, a pop up had came up asking if I had questions not knowing that it would post an entire thread.

I do apologies, I have very little knowledge on vehicles and I bought this civic for 800 to learn, as one should know some basics. I am also just trying to understand how everything works and I don't have family or friends really that know anything about cars and I just don't to take it to a mechanic because they charge way too much and I want to know how things work. I end up stumbling upon this site hoping for so good feedback and some helping hands as this is a forum for vehicles and not to be judge on what i know or not know.
Connecting it to the transmission is pretty easy. Remove the rubber boot from the speed sensor and slide it a few inches up the new speedo cable. Then pull the inner cable out a few inches and feed it down into the hole on the top of the trasmission until it keys all the way down into the slot inside. Now slide the outer sleeve of the cable down in to the transmission. Next you insert the cotter pin sideways into the transmission slot to hold the cable in place. Now pull & stretch the rubber boot down over the cotter pin (this is the hardest part). That's all there is to it.
The first picture is where that housing was already placed, so just making sure that is the correct place to connect, again all new to this, the speedometer cable I have replaced which is already connected to the cluster and fed through, the last thing that I have to do is connect it to the transmission which is where i get a bit confused on how it is supposed to connect. Now is the cable that I have long enough outside the housing or does it need to be longer? And how do I get the "cotter pin" in sideways as i only see the one hole which is where the cable goes into... Thanks again for helping and taking the time to explain, I want to learn more things as I go.
Looks like your cable is busted. There should be a metal piece on the end of the twisted wire that you could spin by hand.
The cotter pin clips into a small hole and notch in the side of that tube in your 1st pic. I think it inserts from the front in towards the firewall. Impossible to see from above.
If your cable is new, then I'm guessing you have it inserted into the sleeve backwards. The end of cable with the cylindrical metal piece on it goes into the transmission. The side that inserts into the cluster is just bare cable that has been ground into a square shape. The cable should feed into the sleeve from the transmission end.....NOT from the gauge cluster end.
Here is what the gauge cluster end should look like. You can see the inner cable has been ground into a square shape.
I found this, which by this picture I see there is an addition piece on the tip that is not on mine, which I'm taking I just need to get a whole new housing. Cause it seems to be that the one I have is broken...
Honda USA should still have both the cable 78410-SH3-A02 and the U-shaped cotter pin that holds it to the transmission 90637-689-000. Contact them 1st so they can verify stock. Don't waste your money on aftermarket versions.
