Default re-upholstering seats? How hard? Links?

I was wondering if anyone knew how hard it would be to re-upholster the seats in my crx HF with vinyl? How long does vinyl last? I wanna make it look like black leather. Anyone have any links of someone who did this? Thank you.

If you have sewing machine skills it's not all that hard, take the old upholstery off of your seats, pull apart all the seams and use the old fabric as a pattern to cut the new material. Sew it all together and put it back on the seats.

I wouldn't use vinyl though... people will think you put Civic STD seats in your CRX

a friend of mine used some fake suede/leather stuff, its a new synthetic, felt very nice, and looked like the interior of some 50,000 dollar car....he had a shop do it though, i think they charged about 350 for the whole interior's worth of seats on a 91 hatch. looked better than most new cars, perfect, and he had the seats back in a day and a half. it was a local hot rod shop. lansing illinois, vos auto interior i think.

being that a family member of mine does this for a living and ive helped before its not easy to DIY

First off Auto Upholstery is very hard to do compared to home furniture....many more springs, clips etc etc, getting the fabric to stretch evenly is hard.

second off you need to have moderate to very good sewing skills otherwise youll end up with crappy seams, uneven seams, crooked welting..etc etc

have you ever tried taking the covers off of your seats? its a bitch to get them off.....and an even bigger bitch to get them back on....

My Advice....Leave it to a professional, youll be much happier with the results

I also have been trying to get my si seats repolstered my driver side is starting to rip, well really its already ripped and starting to get worst. Their was three shops around my area that did but they couldn't find the fabric. I even contact the dealer and they couldn't get the fabric for me either. I ask them how much for the little side pillar that holds you in place and they told me $180 a peice, I was damn did.

Related to the same topic... has anyone ever tried pulling the old covers off the seats and finding firmer foam, or packing more foam onto the seat itself?

My drivers seat is starting to feel kinda soft, and the lip on the left side is starting to sag from sititing on it when I get in/out of the car...

Yes, they do, you just didn't look close enough. Look under "leather upholstery for late model cars". The patterns are the same for cloth or vinyl. In addition, this company can make covers for ANY car in any material if you send them your old covers to use as a pattern.

Whatever. To get vinyl covers for BOTH of your front seats, it would be $325. I don't call that expensive when, at least around here, upholstery shops want $350 per seat.

I have the blue DX cloth seats in mine, so when my bolsters started ripping, I got some of those Iron-on denim patches and stuck them on there... That was about 6 Months ago and so far, they've held up great.

I think im just going to re-upholster them myself. Because the seats are pretty ripped by themselves, it would be a nice project to do over this damn cold winter here. hah.

Personal experience says let the pro's handle this one. If you have ever done it-that is another thing. You will need a sewing machine that is designed for the fabrics used on cars. There is nothing wrong with Naugahyde/vinyl for covering. Most leather kits have vinyl on the back of the seat and leather only on the cushions (bottom and backrest). Contact E&G Classic for a price and or referral to a shop in your area. For those near to Pittsburgh - I use Sisco's Auto Trim. Great family that has been doing stock and custom for 40 years. Someone looking for a fabric match-give these guys a call--they have material that is can do the trick for you. Just another resource for you.
