my POS quit

the thing as now oficially pissed me off. was going to drive it down to CMP to show it off to the guy i bought it from this morning. made it about a block from the house, and it cut off on me. would restart, and not like to idle. would not rev past 2000rpm no matter how much throttle was applied. any time a load was put on the engine, it would die. had to feather the throttle to keep it running at all. wierd thing is, is that it would occasionally clear itself out and run like normal. just for a few seconds, but it would. so i waited for those few seconds to get it going pretty good, then coast and keep it running until the next time it picked back up.
so what in the hell do i check now?
weve already determined that the timing is off, and that im going to need to spend money to fix it right. to set timing, it needs to run.
i looked for all the obvious things, such as wiring haven fallen off, etc. did not find anything obvious. i dont think it jumped time, as it cant jump time, and then go back to proper time intermittently.
my thought is that it may be a fuel filter plugged up, or that my resistor box crapped out on me. any ideas?
codes are 6, 17, and 41

Re: my POS quit
code six is water temp sensor,
code 17 is vss
code 41 is for the primary oxygen sensor heater.
i'd check your distributor to make sure it's not bad as well

you need to correct your timing. iv had this exact problem multiple times from not tensioning my belt correctly. i kept jumping a tooth every couple of days or so. hands down, its your timing. fix that first then move to other issues. youre never going to be able to fix other performance problems with your timing off.

Re: my POS quit
ok, jumping time would make sense, except that it clears itself out every so often. like a few minutes ago, i went down to the shop to make sure my coolant temp sensor was still plugged in, and it fired right up. idles and revved fine for a second, and then went back tp the same thing. so that makes me believe that its not the timing being off causing it. timing belts just dont sporadically jump back and forth like that.
at least not in my experience. i ahev been wrong, though.

Re: my POS quit
yes if the tps is bad it was because the motor hit the firewall and cracked it, i went through like 5 tps sensors before i realized what was goin on with my motor
