Default My night at the track - now with vids!

I went out to the strip last night, not expecting too much. I had some shifting issues last year; I couldn't get into 2nd or 3rd at high RPM, and I had had some fueling and timing issues with my BIN last time that slowed me down quite a bit. Last week, my friend took a look at the clutch, and it turns out that it wasn't fully engaging. He tightened up the cable until there was like no free play left, and I decided that I could go race since it shifted beautifully. I also played around with the fuel and timing in the BIN, and it seemed to wake the engine right up.

I went to the track with my 88 hatch. It has:

JDM 5 million B16A, JDM S1 transmission
OBD-I with Uberdata (8600 Rev limit)
00 Si cams
USDM 97 ITR manifold (not header style)
3" Generic Intake with K&N, 2.25 crush bent exhaust with Magnaflow muffler and testpipe
ACT Heavy Duty PP and street disc (want a 6 puck now)
15" worn out Toyo proxes in the front, CRX sawblades out back - 20 psi in the front.

I gutted the rear interior, took out the passenger seat.

First pass:

R/T... .450 (perfect is a .000 at this track, I was out of practice)
60' ... 2.309
330 ... 6.230
1/8 ... 9.426
MPH ... (N/A, clock was screwed up)
1000 ... 12.148
1/4 ... 14.456
MPH ... 97.93

I then hit a 14.3, and a 14.4 with this configuration. I then decided to tinker with the car.

On an impulse, I pulled the hood. The first pass like this was ok, I hit a 14.3, but I had let off a bit at the finish line. I also didn't get a timeslip

However, I didn't want to give up. I got one last pass, and I was rewarded with:

R/T ... .326
60' ... 2.368 (awful, spun too much)
330 ... 6.192
1/8 ... 9.335 (slow, have done 9.2's)
MPH ... 79.27 (fastest 1/8 MPH yet)
1000 ... 12.018
1/4 ... 14.301
MPH ... 99.04!

I couldn't believe I hit 99 MPH! For this pass I tried shifting at 8400-8500 RPM. It was the last pass of the night. I know the car had a 14.2 or even a 14.1 in it. Too much spin off the line. But on the last pass it pulled like a ****, I even chirped 4th with my shitty clutch

All in all a good night!

Sounds like fun. I just got into SCCA Autocrossing. Very Addictive! On another note, it's no good to drive around with no freeplay on your clutch. Might end up not fully engaging and putting premature wear on your clutch.

Well, it doesn't engage at high rpm otherwise. The engament point is very high on the clutch pedal. I know the disc is pretty much shot by now, but I am hoping the PP is ok. I want to put in a 6 puck with a sprung hub one of these days.

Your cable could be stretched, and to negate cable slack just stop the bushing at the bottom of it from compressing with a radiator hose clamp

Thanks for the tip! I've seen that thread before, but I've never got around to trying it. I guess it's worth a shot!

I have my FTL (full throttle launch) set at 4000 RPM. I keep using the same launch to try and get consistency. I had the tires set at 20 psi, and I held it at 4000 very lightly. When I saw amber, I tried to let the clutch out, not dump it, to minimize spin. Unfortunately, on my 99 mph pass I was a little too eager off the line, and spun too much.

Yeah, may try playing with the mid range a bit more, though honestly I think it's traction that's holding me back.

This kind of thread lets me know something is wrong with my b16 because I don't trap anywhere near you and I have a 88std with no rear interior also, with similar mods. Good job though

Nice times. I was trapping 94mph when I ran a 14.8 in my sedan. Get some slicks and see if you can get close to high 13's.

Hey everyone, went to the track again!

New times:

R/T... .314
60' ... 2.255
330 ... 6.043
1/8 ... 9.160 (best ever )
MPH ... 79.60
1000 ... 11.837
1/4 ... 14.116
MPH ... 99.17

and

R/T... .257
60' ... 2.261
330 ... 6.080
1/8 ... 9.204
MPH ... 79.58
1000 ... 11.877
1/4 ... 14.147
MPH ... 99.41

Came so close to 100 mph! I also hit 80 mph in the 1/8 on one of my last passes. The track was so sticky. I was hooking up too well and bogging on my first passes enroute to 14.5's. I raised my full throttle launch to 5000 rpm and it made all the difference in the world!

Here are some pics:

I may even be able to post a few vids as soon as I get them on my comp!

It's an 88 hatchback... Canadian equivalent to the US STD.

so since my traps were around 97mph, and i was only hitting 14.7's. My traps were good, meaning i can go faster.. but i need traction, Correct? Because the track was so slick and oily no one was getting anytraction, and built V8's on slicks were pulling 2.0 60ft's.

Good time!

I'm running on stock shocks all around

I really need to get some stiff rear shocks. Whole car squats when I shift. I bet a good header would do wonders too!

Go to Autozone and buy a set of rubber spring inserts, you'd be suprised how well they work.
