My new Civic
Hey guys,
Yes another noobe here. I have been reading your forums for some time now and I fell in love. Your forums are full of useful information about Hondas and about cars in general. Anyways, I bought a 91 civic few weeks ago (thanks to Chris for helping me finding the car) as a daily driver. I consider myself lucky to find such a clean civic for such a low price ~$900. It has 112K on it and it runs like a champ, no rust and no issues at all beside what I believe is a head gasket leak, which I will fix in the near future. I absolutely love how the car drives and how smooth it is. The most important thing is I get 350~380 Miles from a full tank and I am glad as the gas prices are high.
Enough of the talk, I have small problem and the problem is that I cant find true specs about my civic. Its 4 speed and it says D15B on the block. Some people said its 90HP and some said it 62~70HP, its not a big of a deal but I would like to know what I have so I don’t feel dumb. Any information and specs about this civic will be appreciated.
BTW I own a 350 WHP EVO and an R32 so I am not noobe to cars but I would love to become an expert in Hondas.
Thanks

Re: (Toda Built)
Okay guys...now for the questions
Yesterday we were playing around with his civic and replacing some gaskets when we decided to pop open the little box thing on top of the intake manifold
well to our surprise we saw a little metal restrictor plate and a mesh filter looking like thing covering up a throttle body like thing (but the throttle body is under that )
anyone tell us what the hell this is for?

Nice STD Civic. I remember when I had the DPFI in mine and I saw that little plate and the "strainer" looking screen. I beleive it's to reduce noise levels (though I cannot picture a 90 hp engine screaming all too loud ). I ended up removing both just to see what would happen and I didn't notice any difference in noise level or power. Heh, then I pulled the engine/tranny and did a complete swap. Clean little car man, I don't even see the infamous Honda rust on the rear quarters etc.

It sooo clean that I don’t want to touch it. I am thinking about a b16 swap but heck the car has no issues at all and I just feel bad to touch it. We are going to pull the motor out in few weeks and replace all gaskets and maybe the clutch for fun.

Re: (unknown civic)
that lil restrictor plate stuff can be removed, at least several have done that ( i did back in the day w/that motor)
I suggest you do a B18 swap and keep it as stock as possible. With the tq of the b18 and the LS tranny you'd still keep good gas MPG.

Re: My new Civic (unknown civic)
nice STD there, as for the arguments about the HP rating of the car
if it's a D15B1 it's around 60-75 hp to the wheels
if it's a D15B2 it's around 75-90 hp to the wheels
The 1988 STD's came with the D15B1 and along with different cams had a much more restrictive exhuast manifold shared with it's other gas pinching cousin, the CRX HF, in which the cat is right after a half-header making for terrible power after 4000RPM.
From 1989-1991 the STDs shared the same exhaust mani as the DX and in 1990 started using the D15B2 with the discontinuation of the B1.
So depending on your year the HP will differ. You stated above it's a 91 so you should be around the 92hp range. But as for caring about the difference, you should look into a new head/intake/exhaust if not a whole new engine.
The "STD" hatch is the equivalent of the CX hatch in later years of Honda in which it's just a no frills very lightweight economy car. The STD's are the lightest 4th Gen hatchs and as for you year you barely press the scales at 2127lb give or take. That's in comparison to the heaviest which is the 1991 Si which is 2291.
I lucked out in finding an 88 STD which is only 1933lb. Very awesome.
You have a lot to work with in that mint little thing, and your engine options are nearly endless. You got 2 "supercars" under your belt but you may find yourself having more fun working on the little honda.
As for a quick 3 second free boost in power (1-2 HP lol) take off the Y joint right after the airbox going to the intake resonator (it's useless) and also pull out the restrictor plate like it's said above. Give you a little little more oomph in the mid band.
Have fun with it, and PM me if you wanna send me some money that you must be growing in order to own an Evo8 and R32.

**** an ls swap....and dont spend money messsing with that single cam
if you get a new motor for it go big or get out of hondas, in the future you will realize that you just spent 1500-3 g's on a motor thats slow as all hell
start with a gsr swap or a type r swap once you get more educated with hondas, trust me, you dont want a b16! they are slow, and so are ls swaps
btw really clean car, if your interested in selling that joker i would offer you 1500 for it

Very Clean Car. I found a very cheap EF today for sale, too. No rust, clean car.. I might pick it up tommorow. Been studying up on this DPFI to MPFI thing, very interesting.... good luck with the car!

Thanks for all the info guys, I really appreciated. See I don’t want to put too much money in it as I want a very reliable daily driver but holy crap this thing is slow. I mean mini vans are killing me when I am merging on the highway. All I need is a bit more power, ~160HP to get it going. Don’t get me wrong it does pull on high speeds but it has zero response on low speeds. I thought about a gsr swap but these will cost 3K for the engine when the b16 will go for 1K.
I don’t know what to do really at this point. I might turbo it but I am not sure how reliable it will be.
All I am going to do now is sit back and enjoy the car and change all the gaskets in few weeks.
Thanks

Well, you could always pick up a SOHC. D16z6 or D16y8 SOHC Vtec motors can be swapped in without a big hassle, they're good motors. Can't squeeze much out of them without Forced Induction, but it'll make the car -alot- more fun to drive. THey're cheap and easy to come by, too. You could pick up motor & transmission for around $400-600 easily, if not less.

My civic is D15B1 which is 70hp and ~80ish trq
I think I am going with the B16 but not this summer. I like how it drives for now plus I have more plans for my EVO
