Re: Montana CRX build thread.
Just got back from the Speedfactory in Washington. Had them do the swap because we wanted a proper tune and setup. It was totally worth it. Everybody in the shop hopped on the project and knocked it out of the park in less than 2 days.
While we were there, we put an add on Craigslist and sold the d15b2 out of the Rex to some lucky dude as a complete swap for $200. THAT dude was singing. But it's gone and put $200 in the pot to work on the car. Sold the seats while we were out there, and some other bits off the car. All that goes back in the pot.
Turns out all the good things that the dude said were going on with the engine... NOT ONE of them was legit. Wasn't sleeved, had stock pistons, stock cams and springs, etc. Even the clutch had been put in poorly and had been smoked and needed to be replaced. It did have a fresh head, which was nice and ARP head studs. Still, we got the whole swap car for less than the price of a swap from H-motors (before shipping), so we came out WAY ahead.
Kevin compression checked it and it was pretty much 230-240 across the board, so it looked okay, so we kept on with the swap.
While they had it apart, Randon mentioned he liked the sound of high RPM, so it was decided we should put Blox B cams in it and springs and retainers to help it rev. I had a stainless rage header we popped on there too. So Kevin put the top end together and put the new clutch in.
Patch (our buddy we brought along) notched and boxed the front crossmember to clear the header and Redbone and I made a new exhaust (all 3") out of some left over bits from around the shop, some crazy half muffler off of one of James old builds and a new muffler about mid way down the pipe. Still crazy loud when vtec cracks. Excellent tone on the car down low, and not to loud (as long as you mind your bizzness..).
old d15b2 is OUT!

The one thing We've learned by watching all the builds and people offering up ideas is this. ALWAYS get your stuff professionally tuned, it's worth it. James whipped a tune on it, and it went 195/135. it's Hella-LOUD! Does have some blow by. Perhaps a b20 bottom end is next on the agenda? Speedfactory FTW!

Re: Montana CRX build thread.
Made our own traction bar.
Wanted something with a bit more style. So I built this one and put a curve in the bar to match the shape of the nose. I've never really cared for the traction bars with the straight bar. We've had it to the track, street flogged it and autocrossed too. Works just fine.

Thanks. I see now why they are $200-$300 to buy one... It's a pile of work. I'm gonna build a jig though and build a few more. Not for sale, I have a few ideas on how to trick it out with more tubing, and tow hooks, etc.
Good old Miller tig welder. I don't do it for a living, just an enthusiastic backyard fabricator.

We took the car to the track and tested out that bar at an SCCA event in Billings. Worked great. Car was a tad soft on the tokico's. Needs some better shocks and springs, a rear sway bar and better tires to truly haul the mail. But Randon did a darn fine job his first time out.
Here's our crew. We had one more guy drive down and meet us. 4 of us from here went down to play. It was a hoot.
Here's a video of the Rex in action.
