It's time for me to start modding my rex after driving it 220K on all stock. I am starting with the brakes. I am not going for bigger brakes, but am first installing stainless steel brake lines. At the same time I want to upgrade my master cylinder.
I've got a 91 crx si, so to go bigger I've been reading that I can use a master cylinder from an 89 prelude, or one from a 90-93 integra non abs.
What's the differences? I assume I'll need to buy the booster with the integra, and can keep using the same one in the crx for the lude? Is that right?
If you aren't changing the brakes, why mess with the master cylinder? Are you planning on upgrading the brakes in the future? The CRX Si already has a 7/8" bore MC. The only larger ones are 15/16" from the Prelude and the 1" (and larger booster) from a GSR.
I got the booster and MC from a '95 GSR, and I had to modify one of the brake lines. Just had to move it from one side to the other.
If you don't plan on upgrading to EX or DA knuckles, I'd suggest you just stick with the stock size. The SS brake lines will give you a noticeable improvement.
There's actually a big article on brake upgrades coming up on that page (stay tuned, it's at the editors), but there isn't much reason to upgrade the master cylinder, even with larger calipers. As long as you're only pushing one piston per corner, the 7/8 MC will work just fine. A larger MC will just get you to brake lock-up with less pedal travel, which isn't necessarily a good thing. Improve your response with stainless lines, which don't balloon like rubber lines do. You'll definitely feel the difference.
