Default Loserkidwac's CRX Power Mirror Write-Up (Using 4 Dr Civic Mirrors)

OK Well here is my method of converting a 88-91 Civic 4Dr Sedan Power mirror to a CRX, this may work for others too but I can't verify that...

You notice at a first glance that the mirros look the same but however are not and mount to the cars differently....

Internally they are also different i was hoping just to swap over the power mirror internals but the internal threaded mounts are in different places, you will see that once you open them up...

Lets start with removing the stock MANUAL mirror:

There is a cap over the end of the adjustor wand that needs to be removed to reviele a small screw remove this and take the end off of the adjustor

Now you can pull the cover off of the door that covers the 3 screw holding the mirror to the side of the door, you may need to remove one of the screws from the door panel/card to alow the cover to slide out...its just clipped on so give it a good tug

Remove the 3 screws, you will need to hold the mirror on the outside too so it dosen't fall

Now to the first step to disassemble the "MANUAL" mirror is use a philips head screw driver put it into the hole in the bottom of the mirror and loosen the screw, it is attached like a clamp to the pivot ball

Once you have loosened the screw apply a little preasure and pull/pry the outer endge of the mirror and backing plate to pop it off the pivot ball, the only other think holding it is a plate you just slide the mirror off of...

Now you need to loosen the 4 screw holding the "mirror control" to the mirror housing once it is free there are 2 springs that you need to remove...

Now you can open the mirror at the "folding joint" remove the 4 screws holding the "mirror housing" to the car mount...

Now remove the triangular plastic cover from the mirror internals, just 3 bolts on the side that would be facing into the car, now you are done disassembling the MANUAL Mirror...

Now we need to disassemble the POWER Mirror:

Unlike the Manual Mirror for POWER mirror you need to heat up the mirror to loosen the adheasive behind it and seperate the mirror from th backing plate...be careful not to crack the mirror, slowly pry it and heat it till its loose...

Now you can see there is a screw holding the backing plate to the mirror motor, remove the screw and becauseful not to loos the spring or pivoting cup, once that is out just pull the plate out, there are 2 plastic arms that go into the motors for the mirror to move, I just pulled them out so don't worry about breaking it just pull it out

Now remove the 4 bolts holding the mirror motor to the the frame...

Now there are 4 screws holding the frame to the Mirror housing and an additional 2 smaller screw holding the bracket on that is a mount for the motor remove all these and the 2 springs on the back, just like inside the Manual Mirror...

Now you can open the mirror at the "folding joint" remove the 2 screws holding the "mirror housing" to the car mount...

Remove the plate the triangular plastic cover from the mirror internals, there are 2 on the side that would be facing into the car and one face away from the car into the mirror...

Now you just have the internals of the mirror, you will need to pop out the plug the wires go through and the snip the wire since you can fit the connector through the whole...

Merging the 2 mirrors together:

Now that you have both mirrors apart you are going to need to do the customizing, first you need to remove the pin going throw the folding joint, the one that connects the "Folding frame" to the "Car mount" I used a hammer and a punch and the pull it out with a vice grips, Do this to both mirror internals...

To complete remove the manual mirror control you will need to remove the 2 screws that hold the pivot for the arm in place and pull out the plastic surrounding the pivot ball(you'll know what I mean when you do it)

Now you take the Car mount from the manual CRX mirror and connect the Power mirrors frame/mirror internals to it, notice that i won't fit...

You need to get out the cutting wheel and start hacking You will also need to cut off these nubs, not a huge deal but if you try and "Fold the mirror" it may get caught on these and you will have a tough time resetting it...

Next step is grab a Beer you deserve it

Now you should have made it so the 2 pieces will fit together, you need to use the pin from POWER Mirror because it is smaller and you won't beable to fit the other one, I grinded it to a point and put some grease on it and it went right in no problem

Put the Triangular plastice piece from the MANUAL mirror on to the car mount

Attach the Frame to the POWER Mirror housing, 2 screws...

Now put the power mirror motor in and run the wires and splice the connetor back on, you won't beable to use the plug since the opening is samller...

You now need to connec the springs to the arms on the car mount, you will not beable to mount them back where they were originally, I would suggest either getting new longer springs or drilling a whole in the back fram plate to connect the original springs too, if you try and strech them you will break the threaded mounts out of the mirror, and you need to connect them or the mirror will flap around

Once you figure out which you are going to do screw the back fram plate into position and screw in the mount for the power motor...

Attach the power mirror motor to the back fram plate then push the mirror backing plate into the motor, line up the 2 white post and just give it a good push, and then put the white pivot cup back and screw it down and don't forget the spring

Now your in the home strech, last thing you need to do is cut the opening in the center of the seal a little bigger to allow the mirror plug to pass through

Reattach the mirror and you are good to go

Wireing is also very easy to do, there are no relays just wire each plug to the mirror switch, I can provide a wire diagram if needed but thats the easy part of the install

Hope this is useful and maybe becomes a sticky!!

how long did this take you from start to finish?

could you elaborate on the wiring? I know i would need the switch in the dash, and a set of power mirrors. Would i need a wiring harness from the donor car?

I also think it's possible to complete the job w/o cutting the harness. Looks like you could have removed some of the elec tape, depinned the wires from the connector and pulled them out one by one rather than cutting the harness.

thanks for taking the time to take, organize and post those pics and give us a write up

Well the first mirror took a while because of trial and error and finding this solution, I would say maybe an hour since you all have pictures and know what to do

As for the wiring I clipped the pig tails out of the donor car and made my own harness, you could also just use wire connects if you can't get the pig tails, I got some length of wire 3 different color and wrappped them together in some duct tape and hid them in the door and in the dash, for the time being I just had the wire running from the door to the inteiror car with plans to have it hidden with the rest of the wire going through the door jam...

Oh what you see in the pictures above is the wires from the mirror motor to the plug, I had to cut them because the plug will not fit through the car mount peice and you need to remove it from there

here is a wire diagram I used from a PDF version of a CRX workshop manual, I can answer an more questions you guys have too, glad to help

Looks like the wire on the bottom right got cut off but that is the ground...I also forgot to mention you NEED the plug for the mirror switch, you can make due without the mirror plugs but the switch is crutial, I acctually have an extra if someone is interested in trying this

Mirrors and switches are all over ebay, for some reason the passanger side mirror is a little harder to find, but I have seen New mirrors selling for $30 I believe which still makes this a lot cheaper than the JDM mirrors

All ED/EF owners

Anyone know if the EF hatch and CRX use the same mirrors? I think this could work for either one

Nice nice ... i had it easy when i had my 88 DX sedan and just bolted on power mirrors from an LX. The wiring would be the same...just follow the wiring diagram in the FSM and find a power source and ground.

nice writeup. wish someone would post a write-up on how to convert LHD USDM mirrors to be power folding using the JDM parts. i've seen a similar write up for converting LHD USDM integra power mirrors to power folding, but never for anything else.

I used a swiitch from an 88 but I believe any 88-91 will work, if you car lucky you can score both mirrors and switch from one car at the junk yard, I have an extra swithc if someone wants it

My local yards are $7-$10 per mirror and switch is like $5 but you can pocket it
