I bought an STD! LoL. No really, check out the new WIP! (work in progress)
**Updates on pages 3 and 4!!**
Well, I finally found a car!!
I have been looking for an EF for about three months now and have called on a TON of cars. I was beginning to think I wasn't going to find one that I wanted.
In the mean time, I built a d16z6 from the ground up to put in my new EF. So, because I already have an engine, I was looking for a cheap shell that was in good shape but had some mechanical problems.
Well, I found exactly what I was looking for!!
I came across this 1990 Civic STD hatch a few weeks ago and, after calling the seller a few times, arranged to check it out yesterday. I bought it and picked it up this afternoon.
This car has been sitting in a field behind a barn for who knows how long. I can tell that the owner has been mowing around the car for quite some time. The tags on the plates expired in July of 2004, so it's been off the road for at least that long.
Anyways, on to the pics!!
Here she is... this has been her home for the last year and a half or more.
Notice that there are ZERO dings and ZERO rust on this car!! It has never been in an accident. I am the third owner, I even found the original owners manual with the original buyer's name, address, and the pick up date in it. It was bought from a dealership in downtown Portland just a few miles from my house.
Oh, those tires you see in the pictures. The guy gave me a set of brand new snow tires mounted on steelies. The tires on the car are almost brand new as well.
I had to rent a Uhaul tow dolly to get it home. The guy's daughter was driving the car and the radiator hose sprung a leak. Then the fluid leaked out and you know the rest of the story. They had a mechanic take the head off and give them an estimate to fix it. The price was too high so they just let the car sit instead of fixing it.
Here's my dad finishing up strapping it down to the trailer.
The interior!
It's perfect! Really, better than most 15 year old cars I've seen. The seats have no rips tears, or cracks in them. The carpet is in good shape and there have been OE floormats in the car for it's lifetime. Underneath the floormats the carpet looks brand new.
Here's my sweet 4-speed shifter. No console either. Man, this is the basic of basic cars! No console, or even a passenger's side mirror.
On the way home we stopped by a car wash and sprayed it off really quick. There was a ton of dirt on it. It hadn't been washed for a LONG time.
Here are some pics I took after I got it back to my apartment.
No dings here!!
None here either!!
I didn't blur my plates for obvious reasons. If you try to find my house you will be led to a farm way out in St. Helens Oregon.
The sweet rusty *** steelies.
This thing had some awesome sheepskin seat covers. They were the first thing to go...
Pretty low milage for a 15 year old car...
I found a TON of bugs and grass in this car. There were three bee hives and one of them still have bees in it! LoL...
I found this little guy in there too, must have made it in the car, but didn't make it out...
The rear seats, vinyl is perfect!!
The junk in the trunk! Here's the stuff left over from when the mechanic came and took the head off.
And the engine bay.
Yes, that is an AC compressor you see there! This car has AC! Yahoo! Bonus! No side mirror, or console, but it's got AC!
Here's one of the bee hives I found...
And I even found a mint cargo cover. Score!
Well, there she is. I have big plans for this car. To start with I'm going to swap in this engine...
Then I'll add my Skunk2 coilovers, ST sway bars, and a few other goodies.
I am also going to get a nice seat for this car. Maybe the Momo Start, or Corbeau FX1.
One question. This thing has almost a full tank of gas. I know I should drain the tank... How do I drain it?
Is there anything else I really need to check with a car that has been sitting for this long? I know the battery is dead, and the headlights are full of water. What else should I check/replace??
This car is going to take some work to get up to par, but I bought it for $500 so I think I got a pretty good deal!
Anyways, I just wanted to share because I'm pumped!

There's a drain bolt on the tank, can't quite see where it is from my Helms, but looks like it's on the driver's side, near the rear of the tank.
The tank is probably a bit rusted inside, you might want to pull it out completely and have a look at it before you start to use the car.
Nice find, wish my STD had no rust

Hmmm, you don't visit HT much do you? Cause that car is in a better than average condition for the ED/EF's that HT'ers normally buy as project cars...

At first i thought twilight was tryin to be a *******, then i noticed he is in europe. Well of COURSE, you got the nice ones over there, a Std model over here is the lowest line model of the ED 88-91 hatch. Usually ALOT of them come in that same blue color, it's called laurel metallic blue i think.

Re: (Contender25)
Thanks for the comments!
So as far as the gas goes. I have to drain the tank, but then I should purge the fuel lines too right?
What's the correct method of purging the fuel lines? I was thinking I could just put one end of the fuel line into a bucket and prime the fuel pump for a few seconds, that would probably do the trick.
Also, I was looking at the headlights last night and it looks like there are some clips or something that hold the glass on. Is there a way to take them apart so I can clean them out? Or, should I just look around and buy some new headlights?

Re: (EJ1 wilcox)
I wouldn't worry about purging the lines... I had gas sit in my EX for a year and a half before I dropped my ZC in. Just drained the gas tank and put in fresh 93 octane.
Damn good find tho. Good luck!

I have been searching around for answers about the headlights.
Looks like I can't just take them apart to clean them out. From the looks of it, there is a lot of oxidation, mold, rust, and water inside the housings. Probably not really worth the effort to fix them?
I'll just start looking for a set of headlights in better shape.
Also, about a passenger side mirror. Is eBay the best place to find one? Looks like I can get one for about $28 or so shipped.

I've got a set of cheap black projector lights sitting around somewhere... should work on a CRX/hatch.

just crawl under the car and you will see the drain plug for the gas tank.. i think it was 14mm..or 17mm... i dont remember... for the headlights.. i heat them with an oven... one at a time.. face the glass inside the oven and shut the door to make the door hold up the light... wait 10-15 minutes then pry it apart reallll slow... heat it back up add more clue and clamp it back together.. done

Nice car!
Just want to say that that's not a bee nest in your engine bay...that's a wasp/hornet nest
Car looks good.
Does the a/c system still have pressure? If a car has been sitting for a long time, it's not uncommon for the seals to deteriorate and start to leak.
That's why you should always run your a/c system at least once a week, even during winter (just turn it to hot)...it keeps it all smooth and nice inside.

Good question! And one I was about to ask!
I know nothing about AC, I have never built a car that had it. How can I check if it still has pressure?
Also, as far as making the AC work with the d16z6... do I just attach the AC compressor to the engine, run a belt to the crank pully, and it will work? Or, do I need something else to make the AC work with the d16z6? Will I need to modify the ECU at all? When I pull the engine, should I remove the AC lines from the compressor and then hook them back up when I drop the new engine in there?
I really would like to set it up so that the AC works with the swap, but I'm really clueless about how to make it work.
I'm such an EF noob. LoL.
