Default how do i align the camshaft?

So...kd is a beast.
I have d15b2 block, a6 camshaft and a y7 cam gear.
With my b2 gear my timing is retarded 5 degrees, so a y7/8 is suppose to fix this, right?
Do i set the camshaft and gear at Up, 12 o clock?

Right now im running it with the camshaft retarded about 3 teeth. I did this by slipping off the belt, while everything at tdc, then i turned the cam towards the front of the car, 3 teeth, and slipped the belt back on.
The dizzy all the way advanced, my timing is almost perfect, like 1 or 2 ignition degrees off. BUT!!! My car is sluggishly slow, hesitates on first gear, and i think retarding the cam that much( without an adjustable cam gear is bad). True?
Need help to fix this... i want to keep my a6 cam in, otherwise i guess ill just put the b2 cam back in...

Each cam gear tooth is like 4 degrees.

Oh damn. Hmm no wonder. But why does my timing almost align but its sucky?
Something like this right. 360° in a circle, 38 cam gear teeth, 360\38=9.47.
Crank is double of camshaft, so you have to divide 9.47 by 2 which is 4.735= 1 tooth.
So then the y8 advances( while exactly at UP ) the whole time scale by a tooth?? Or do i have toadvance it myself about half a tooth?

I only have a b2 and y7, i had an adjustable but i destroyed it because my cam seized up( still not sure if my dizzy caused it or me messing with timing)

I read, dont know if it applies to hondas tho, that one can only advance/retard the camshaft 4teeth, otherwise you bend valves.

Any reason you set mechanical timing (moved belt) off 3 teeth?

The Y* gear you are using should fix the 1/2 tooth issue so you don't need a cam gear.

Because i advanced the cam about 2 teeth, and it was far worse. But ill adjust it right now, so do i put the "keyway"/U at 12 o clock, or slightly slanted to like a 1 o clock?

Wow, that y7 camgear is a myth. I set my gear at 12 o clock. And now when i put the ign timing to 18°, im off the tdc mark by a good 3 inches... with dizzy advanced.

Ill try n show pics for those that need to see.

Maybe try this:
Set the crank to TDC.
Then take the cam gear off and slide the b2 cam gear on and rotate the gear so that the TDC a6 markings line up.
Replace the cam gear with the Y7 gear and see where it lines up.

I would assume that to be really close

It sounds like you were close with the 3 teeth off, but obviously not right since you had the distributor rotated so far. Maybe a tooth off.

The y7 gear only corrects for the 1/2 degree issue

That makes sense actually.
How exactly do i line up the a6 cam? I dont have the cover behind the camshaft. Do i juat line it up with the cylinder head?

Damn. I put the b2 cam on, lined it with the head, took it off put the y7 gear on, then made a mark where the UP sits
Then slipped the belt on, but when i ernt to tension it( rotate the crank counter clock) it threw off the alignment, so after tensioned, rotated 2 full revolutions, and the cam gear no longer was at the "tdc spot" that it was before i put the belt on,

So after turning my car on and checking timing, it was way off.

Do you know what year your A6 cam is? The 88 and 89-91 are indexed different.

Put your PM3 cam gear back on and leave the bolt out. Position the cam so the keyway is at 12 o'clock.

If the cam is from 88 the timing marks on the gear will line up with the surface of the head.

If it's a 89-91 the marks will be advanced.

You use the Y series gear on the 89-91 A6 cam and the PM3 if it's from 88.

I was just reading about that haha. Yeah this cam came from an 88 civic wagon rt4wd, so 88 cam.
I put my b2 camshaft back in, and man it feels sucky, you feel the difference when trying to accelerate....

But anyways, i finally got it. Using stock b2 gear, i lined the mark on the intake side with the head, the mark on exhaust side is a little lower than the head, but now my ignition timing can be adjusted.
