Honda CRX A/C dryer problem
Hi all,
I recently purchased a 1989 CRX with only 82,000 on it and it needs some attention. I had the A/C checked out by a local Honda dealer and they tell me I must replace the dryer because the 134a is leaking through the side. (The system has been converted to 134a.) The catch is, they say if I replace the dryer I MUST replace the lines as well. The dryer isn't so expensive, but the lines are out of sight. Can someone tell me why the lines HAVE to be replaced?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Blessings,
Will

I was told by a mechainc a couple days ago that when you go to a dealer they will warrenty the system BUT you have to replace the complete system to have them warrenty it. Im guessing if you pay out of your own pocket they will replace the dryer but it wont be warrentied.

Welcome noob and congrats on the CRX purchase.
Lesson number one: He who takes his old Honda to a dealership for service PAYS OUT THE YIN-YANG.
Their story sounds fishy. I suspect they're not sure where all the leaks are and they are just saying to replace everything so they're covered.... aannd to make a nice profit.

Re: Honda CRX A/C dryer problem
lol. If you convert R-12 to R-134A all you change is the o rings, fittings for hi/low side, and new oil for the compressor. They flush and vaccum the system to remove all the old freon. To the OP, If they change the lines, the ENTIRE system has to be converted to R-134A. You can't mix-match R-12 stuff with R-134A unless you get custom lines made. I say take it to an independant A/C service place and have the O-Rings replaced and a new reciever/dryer installed and a full flush vaccum and re-charge. That should solve your problems. Also, more than likely an O ring has lost it's seal so that is where the freon is leaking.

Re: Honda CRX A/C dryer problem
I dont know what these guys are talking abnout changing lines, and Seals and what not, I installed the 134 fittings on my r12 system my self had a shop pull a vacuum on it for 10 bucks and charged it my self. That was 5 years ago and it still blowes cold as hell today. I never chagned any seals or lines or anything. If it was me I would go to a junkyard pull a dryer reinstall it take it to a local ship have them pull a vacuum and check for leaks and charge it.

Re: Honda CRX A/C dryer problem
Thanks all for the advice. I appreciate it. I'm having the oil seals replaced at the crank and camshaft tomorrow, so the A/C project will wait a few days. The little rascal set for several years so the seals dried out big-time and I just don't have the time to do them myself.
I'll keep you posted on the A/C results.
Blessings,
Will

Re: Honda CRX A/C dryer problem
After a loooooooong time away, I'm back. I had the oil seals replaced, garage floor looks a lot better now, and had the dryer done just three days ago. Before, the A/C was ineffective after two days or LESS, but it's still holding fine and I am so very glad.
The only other issue left to care for is a big rattle from the hatch - I need to tighten the beast down so it doesn't go "bump" when I hit rough roads. Then my new little toy is ready and rarin' to go, go, go!
Thanks again for all the advice, fellows, I wish I had discovered this site before spending the big bucks for nothing the first time around!
Blessings,
Will in Ohio
