Fix it ticket for loud exhaust.
got pulled over, and i received a fix it ticket for my loud exhaust.
i currently have a b16 setup with a DC 4-1 header and a thermal exhaust. last i remember the legal db in Connecticut was 130 db...i could be way off, but thats what i remember.
so my problem is i would rather not cut my exhaust up to add a resonator, but is that my only choice?
i need a low budget fix...so getting a stocker exhaust bent up at the shop will not due with my $ situation at the moment.
any suggestions?

junk yard?
Will the current setup let u bolt the end of a stock exhaust to you car?
Because i know some full exhaust setup's come in pieces and you have to bolt them up before you slap them on the car.

i got a ticket for my exhaust! i never got it fixed and when i told the judge that he just droped the case. so **** the cop, and tell the judge it is a replacement muffler and how is the cop supposed to know that it was to loud anyway did he have a decibel meter to prove that it was over a certain limit?
well that is what i did and will do again
well that is what i did and will do again

Re: Fix it ticket for loud exhaust. (crackalackin)
well my ticket is to go to the DMV not to court. once i go to the DMV the inspector will use a DB meter and pass me or not.
my exhaust will have to be cut in order to do anything since its all welded.
anyone else?

do you have a funtional cat on it? if you don't then get one, made a huge difference on mine between the ZC with gutted cat and B16 with a cat. The B16 is far quieter, with a OBX Dual tip that was very raspy with no cat.

I've got a similar set-up, B16 with DC 4-2-1 and Thermal 2.25 cat-back. Stock cat. The thing is loud as fock, but I don't think I would fail a decibel test.

Mine is not at all bad, now when the JDM 4-1 and high flow cat goes on I bet its going to be louder, particularly after the Skunk2 intak, Edelbrock 65mm TB and Rocket cams and springs go into it.

i never checked to look if the previous owner hollowed the cat or not , but i'll be going down to my local exhaust place and having a 2 1/4" with an oem style muffler installed for the test. i can also use it for emissions when that comes up as well.
thanks for the replys.

130dB ?!?!?!?!?
Are you serious ? A spaceshuttle at take-off produces around 125-130dB, so that should give you an idea of how loud 130dB really is......
Legal sound/noise levels for cars in general are around 70-80dB.....

nothing better then to bother imports that are a lil loud
but if you have a harley or some other low power 2 cylinder pos bike you can have straight pipes and wake everyone up at 3 in the monring.... damn double standards...

130 dB is about the threshold of pain...
in my 2000 edition new york vehicle and traffic law book there are 3 tables for sound level...
all SPL's are A-Weighted
sound levels are measured at a distance of fifty feet from the center of the lane in which the motor vehicle is traveling.
Table I (vehicles weighing 10,000lbs or more)
Maximum Allowable A-Weighted Sound Levels
35 mph or less - 86 dB(A)
35 mph or more - 90 dB(A)
Table II (vehicles weighing 10,000lbs or less)
Maximum Allowable A-Weighted Sound Levels
35 mph or less - 76 dB(A)
35 mph or more - 82 dB(A)
Table III (motorcycles)
Maximum Allowable A-Weighted Sound Levels
35 mph or less - 82 dB(A)
35 mph or more - 86 dB(A)
thats the jist of it...straight from the cops book (of 2000 though)

Re: Fix it ticket for loud exhaust. (mansonclubpuir)
buy alot of steel wool and sholve it into your pipes where it bolts up and using a wire to hold the steel wool. then once you past the test take out the wire and start revving your car and you'll be shooting a big ball of fire....
i did this and it worked perfectly it was actually quietier that stock..keep the whole aftermarket system on the car while performing the test to the cops...lol

Re: Fix it ticket for loud exhaust. (virginia_dude)
I have a B16 in my rex with a highflow cat and a resonator, and it's still loud as hell when VTEC kicks in, and I still got pulled over for it and told to fix it. I ****** hate cops. It's not loud when just normally driving around, only when I get on it and VTEC engages, so the cop telling me that he could hear me all around town is a bunch of harassing bullshit. He even specifically told me that since there's so many street racers that have loud aftermarket exhausts, that's their main reason for being so strict on it. Try to find any part of that statement that doesn't sound fucked up to you.

key words.....i could be way off...... i guess i was!
but thanks everyone for bringing that to my attention...i'll be sure to look up the correct db numbers in my state, and post them up for all to see. i'm sure this summer everyone is going to be having problems with loud exhaust systems since all those shows on TLC and Discovery channel were on.
anyways... i'm calling the DMV tomorrow to see if i actually have to come to take the test. the back of the ticket has information for the shop to fill out. i wonder if i just have someone fill that out...a car repair center...if i actually have to go and prove the work was done. i'll post up my findings tomorrow.
im also thinking about just putting a 24" resonator so the exhaust will be quiet, but do i really want to cut up my Thermal...??? decisions...decisions...

Re: Fix it ticket for loud exhaust. (mansonclubpuir)
Update...
went to DMV failed with the Thermal on the DB test...was over 80db, but the inspector took the test wrong and we got into an argument....failed.
went to Fast Go put on an exhaust system from the LCA back using the thermal flange and passed the test. then the inspector told me that the police department will be issuing Misdemeanor tickets straight to court for loud exhaust systems.
needless to say i will be keeping my somewhat OEM system on unless im going to the track because i don't like to go to court.
Thermal will be installing my Stealth Baffel next week when i send the system to them once i get that back i'll put it on and let you all know how quite the system is...we'll see
