Fact or Fiction ~ Radiator support AKA T-bar: The frontend conversion (56k warning)
This faq is to help people buy the right T-bar for their frontend conversion.
Myth: You can use your USDM T-bar or the EF8/9 T-Bar.
False
Fact: There is a T-bar that you don't have to modify to work with your frontend conversion.
There are two different types of T-bars that come out of Japan.
1. EF8/9 (Black one)
2. EF3/6/7 *with SiR frontends* (Red one)
The first one is the T-bar from the EF8/EF9 SiR (Black one). It is the exact same one that we use here in America and Canada.
Second T-bar is from the EF3/6/7 (Red one) with the SiR frontends on them.
The Difference:
As you can see the T-bars are not that different from each other. The EF8/9 (Black one) has the Air box grate on it and the EF3/6/7 (Red one) don't. But that doesn't matter, what really matters is which one works the best.
The measurements of the EF8/9 (Black one) are from side to side are 24 inches.
The EF3/6/7 (Red one) from side to side is also 24 inches.
From front to back(by latch) on the EF8/9 (Black one) is 2 3/4 inches.
And on the EF3/6/7 (Red one) is 3 inches
EF8/9 (Black one)
EF3/6/7 (Red one)
Hood shut
EF8/9 (Black one) The hood doesn't latch
EF3/6/7 (Red one) Hood latches
It looks like the only one that is going to work is the EF3/6/7 (Red one).
Reasons why:
Why do they make 2 different types of T-bars?
The reasons why they made two different ones is because of the B16. When they made the SiR they made the engine bay alittle bit bigger than the STD/HF/DX/Si so they can fit the b16 in without any room issues. Later on they put SiR frontends on alot of the lower models and to save money instead of using the chassis for the EF8/9 and put SOHC ZC, DOHC ZC and other lower engines in them they made the the T-bar and extended the bumper support brackets.
What to look for when buying a new T-bar:
When you are looking on EBay for a new T-bar to fit your new frontend always read the whole description.
Like this one.

how do you know if this is the real deal. Look at the picture and look at mine again
it could be the right one. All the seller says is "88-91 crx ef8 radiator support bracket." In this one they really don't tell you much and the seller shows one lousy picture. From what I can see is this one will not work with your conversion.
In conclusion:
There is only one T-bar you can use on your conversion and its the EF3/6/7 one. And sometimes it can be very hard to find one for sell and that works. Some times frontends you buy come with T-bars that are correct but most of the time you get the one that doesn't work or you don't get one at all. As long as you use this faq when buying a T-bar you can get the right one that works and not get scammed and end up buying the wrong one.
And if you can't get the right T-bar or its just to expensive for your blood you can also use this guide that schwanginpt made.

great writeup!!! this information has been stored away in the back of my brain for some time, and is somewhat common knowledge, but i'm glad someone finally took the time to document it all.

Hey this is an awesome thread.
I have a request.
Can you put a normal USDM Tbar in the shots so we can compare it with the EF7 piece?
Is there any way to tell that you are buying an EF3/6/7 piece and not a USDm piece without bolting it down?

you can use it, but you need to space it out the front a bit.

Re: Fact or Fiction ~ Radiator support AKA T-bar: The frontend conversion (harmonator84)
It's good to see the info on the EF6/7 tie bar is finally getting out there. For the longest time used parts suppliers were handing out mis-information regarding the EF8 tie bar. Sure it will fit (so will your USDM) but it will look like crap. I know I didn't want to "space" anything out.
Here's another thread on TJ regarding the whole conversion. It outlines as this did the difference between the EF6/7 and EF8 tie bars BUT it also talks about how to modify the JDM bumper so it will line up correctly as well.

I know this is an old thread, but can I buy just the "T bar" for, lets say an EG or Del Sol?
