Default Engine stored for 2 years in garage still good???

was planning to buy a motor from someone who bought a complete longblock and tranny from HMO and never got to putting it into a car so it's just been sitting in the garage for the last 2 years. never turned over or anything like that. just wondering if motor will still be good or it will be bad?

Depends on the condition of the garage. If there was too much moisture then the block could be seized up. I made the mistake of leaving a block in my friends shop....right below a leak in the roof. Now I just keep blocks in building in the guest room lol

Yeah just check for any bits that may have corroded / rusted. You'll probably wanna do the valve stem seals as the spring in them can get a bit rusty. Or perhaps who ever stored it kept oil in it or sprayed it with long life

If the guy said "it's been pickled with Marvel Mystery oil". you could bet he knew something about engines because that's what us ultralight guys did every winter with our 2-cycle Rotax motors: Pickle the cylinders. Pay as LITTLE as possible, use this as leverage.

Bagged up with either moth ***** OR demoist bags like boaters use in the cabin? If it's just sitting out, guy's a dick!

I'd look in the exhaust and intake sides of the block to see if there is any corrosion of the valve stems in there. The engine bore itself should be ok if no water has got into that side, which is why you need to check the valves through the intake and exhaust ports.

Open the crankcase drain plugs if you can - you can have some idea of what condition the water jacket is in that way. If thats not possible, look in the water pump housing and the head cooling inlet/outlets to see if they are corroded.

If the engine has been under cover they can be good for ages. We've had engines start up after 2, 5 and 12 years of not running. They can also be corroded and useless.

Be suspicious and cynical!
