There's a guy in FL that makes some pretty good overfenders for the crx.

I used them on my EF in this thread:

I like those quite a bit, and $300 is a good price on them. We'll see where this build progresses, but that's on my radar now.

Today, I paused the core of the project and took a ride down to a friend's place for these:

One is a 12.5:1 compression ratio d16z6 (sohc 1.6 with vtec) with an Si transmission, the other is a plain-jane d16z6. I haven't decided which one I'd prefer to run yet, but I'm leaning toward the 12.5:1 since it's already assembled and I have a base tune dialed in on one of the ECU's already.

There isn't much left to do, and I'm hoping the weather is nice tomorrow (above 20F would be fine with me) so I can roll it out of the garage to have plenty of workspace.

That's most of what I did this weekend. I cleaned and organized the garage a bit, and sold off a few leftover parts from previous projects. I really need to finish organizing, or just break down and buy a house.

It's not a racecar! I swear it! Parts are just so cheap, I can't say no.

Did you use flux core on that body panel?

You should throw rocks at him ... or her, if it's three owners ago.

Hey now, I know I could've prepped a bit more, but it's not THAT ugly, is it?

It was a general question. As long as the panel fits and didn't warp during welding, nobody will know

Follow up question. Why did you use flux core over using a gas shielded wire?

Well, I used .023 solid wire and 75/25 gas for this. I considered using flux core originally, because I didn't have a bottle to go on the Hobart 140. I really could've spent more time fitting it up, the quarter panel isn't quite flush with the body. IDGAF, as long as I don't have to do it again this year.

You should just not even grind it, then primer and paint it. Flat paint of course.

You'll have a story to tell of how it got its scars as a result of its previous owner

I seriously considered it, but it'd definitely collect water and re-rust that way. I'll grind it down a bit, throw some seam sealer at it, and whatever paint I have lying around. Agricultural repair FTW.

I'm going to re-make my seat mount tonight or tomorrow, I'm waiting on a fuel filler hose, and I need to fix the window tracks ... then it's done.

Sorry for the downtime, I got a little distracted with our rules/awards banquet coming up this weekend. I just put together a video from the 2015 race season, just a series of slow-motion startline launches of the various cars that were racing during that run. I got most of them, along with a couple Miatas. I was surprised to see that my launch was pretty much perfect (car 365, right around 55 seconds). What you're looking for is a ratcheting movement, where the tires are right on the verge of losing grip, but aren't free-spinning. I also found it really interesting to see how the different Subarus are front-bias or rear-bias, even those with identical gearboxes and differentials.

Watch the video here:

Wow, that 920 car RIPPED out of that start.

That ratcheting motion...how does that feel? Like wheel hop? Or the slight slipping feeling but your car is scooting along?

700cc of pure awesome. Not all of us have the problem of 'too much engine' ...

... but he certainly tears up the hill within an inch of that thing's life. I have a lot of respect for the guy.

You barely notice the ratcheting. Like individual pistons firing, my body just accepts that it's accelerating, and doesn't look for much more detail. Depending upon the bushings in the car, it can be a little like wheel hop, and if you have really sticky tires it can actually cause wheel jump. It sounds like a rally car taking off on gravel for a few seconds, then it just turns back into a modest little Miata sound.

Ahh ok. I think I understand.

How much was that video slowed down? It seemed like some cars just sat there and burned the tires a bit!

Playback is at 30%. At full-speed, it takes less than a second for most of these cars to move forward the first car-length. The Super Chicken (the AWD twin-Subaru-turbo'd Audi-powered monstrosity) takes around .4 seconds to move that first car-length. I'm sure a car on drag slicks would make that look foolishly slow, but our launches have very little impact on our times. Carrying speed through turns is all that matters in a hillclimb.

It probably doesn't help that the road is not 'prepped' and y'all are launching uphill.

The next hillclimb video will show just how unprepped the road actually is. You guys don't really get 'seasons' in the Central Valley, so you may not be familiar with the glory that is frost heaves (which get worse on mountain roads, and mountain roads are traditionally badly maintained).

This is played back at full-speed (it might still be 10% slower, I didn't double-check my math), for reference.

Runs, drives well. More video editing required before I can post the series.
