DIY CRX JDM B16 Vtec solenoid gasket change
Ok well i have noticed oil running down the block near the tranny so i traced it and ended up being under the vtec solenoid. So i ordered the upper gasket and head to solenoid gasket from acura and decided to replace them today. So here we go:
First locate the vtec oil pressure sensor and vtec spool sensor and disconnect carefully.
Then locate all 3 10mm bolts holding on the vtec solenoid to the head.
Use a 6" extension to remove them all and push on the lower radiator hose to remove the rear bolt.
Once all the bolts are removed gently pull off the solenoid, it may be hard to get off but you'll get it.
Plug the 2 holes in the head with the tips of a rag.
This was my dirty little guy after i removed it. I am going to clean it later, you'll see why.
So here is the original JDM gasket.
I used a pick to gently remove the old gasket. It was so brittle it fell apart!
Now look at the top of the solenoid, you will see 3 more 10mm bolts. Remove these to replace the top gasket.
Here is the original JDM top gasket.
This a side by side of the old gasket and new gasket i ordered. Simply oil up the new gasket and replace. Put those 10mm bolts back in snug. You will tighten them once its on the car.
I now cleaned the solenoid since its less chance of water getting in the top part!
I couldn't locate my steam cleaner so i degreased it by hand and toothbrush for now. I will get it better with the steam cleaner later.
Now after its all cleaned, oil and replace the head to solenoid gasket.
Go and bolt it back on. Tighten all 3 10mm bolts slowly in a criss cross patternt. Once they are all snug, tighten them so no oil will leak out. Retighten the 3 10mm bolts for the top gasket nice and tight!
Reconnect the oil pressure switch and vtec solenoid connector and check your oil level.
Start the car and check for any leaks, if none then test drive it and make sure again when you come back that there are no leaks. If there are just tighten those bolts some more like i had to do and now your done

Just to add:
If you have an obd-0 b16, make sure you order the vtec solenoid gaskets for a 90-91 nsx. They are the only ones that fit correctly in the older solenoids.

i got them for a 95 Del Sol (b16 model) and they only ran me 14 for both and they were in stock. but all vtec solonoids share the same gasket. at least thats what the dealership told me.

Re: DIY CRX JDM B16 Vtec solenoid gasket change (crx_si-r)
for the obd0 b16 i've heard only the 90 91 nsx ones will work, and that people have tried others and they worked, but not for long.

You are wrong, They are shaped differently and do indeed rip and leak over time. The only one that fits correct on the JDM b16a is the 90-91 NSX hence the years.
Its the same shape and fits in nice, I had it since i made this post and no more leak down down the tranny

Mine were easily under $20 when I did them on my B16 CRX. :scratches head:

1988-1991 (XSi) OBD-0 B16 require both vtec solenoid gaskets from a 91 Acura NSX.
Large gasket: #15825-PR3-005
Smaller Upper Gasket: #36172-PR3-005
