Default daily driven build

I am making this thread to keep a log of everything I do to my daily driver.

The car is a clean title completely stock 1990 civic hatchback STD

This is how it looked when I bought her

I do not have any pictures of the interior yet, but It honestly looks brand new.
the seats had seatcovers on them since the car was bought so the seats look like they were just made.

currently I am riding on VX wheels... 9lbs each!

Here is a picture of the engine bay:

the engine is a d15b1 and is mated to a 4spd cable transmission
that's 4 long gears to take advantage of all 70hp... IMAGINE
AND it has A/C

The plan:
since this is my daily driver, I am going to keep the stock ride height and exterior appearance because I don't like to get bothered by cops.(we'll see how long that lasts)
I am going to swap in a b18b and run OBD0 with a cable transmission.

keeping in mind this is my first swap... lets get started

On 8/07/2007 I went to Hmotorsonline and picked this up:

it is a 1998 b18b longblock from an automatic integra
so clean I want to eat off of it

Here is a shot of the removed valve cover:

The only thing that doesn't look almost new is the exhaust manifold(rusty), but I am not going to use it so that does not matter.(all bolts came off easily)

I bought avid mounts w/ shift linkage and energy shifter bushings.
here are the mounts(and haynes):

shift linkage:

I got the needed rear L-bracket from a 90 integra:

I also aquired the timing side engine mounting bracket from a 90 integra:

because I am running OBD0 I had to pick up a OBD0 distributor from a 90 integra:

Here is the ECU
it is an OBD0 PR4 from a 5spd

I bought an S1 cable tranny from an LS integra.(later I want to get a b16 tranny and keep the ls 5th gear)
forgive how dirty it is in the picture:

picked me up a 95 ITR starter with 17,000km:

I picked up a F1 racing stage 3 clutch kit
and 9.75lb 4140 chromoly steel flywheel
not bad for $240 OTD

here is the flywheel:

I also bought a used halfshaft and brandnew axles for a 90 integra:

here are the axles:

started a little wiring:

Even though I am running OBD0, I am going to run the OBD2 injectors that came with the longblock.
since my car is not already mpfi, I need to convert from dpfi to mpfi.
I do not want to get into the specifics of the conversion, but these links should help those curious about the specifics:

I wired the injectors to a 5 wire clip that I got from the junkyard
This was so I can disconnect at the firewall if I ever need to take out the engine.

I am currently waiting on a order from acura for misc. pieces that i need.
I am going to prep the engine and plan on doing the swap on Friday the 17th.

update 8/10/2007

I picked up some flywheel, pressure plate, and half-shaft bolts today:

Here is my innovative A/C bracket I also got in the mail

update 8/14/2007

I sold my VX wheels for a little extra cash today

I got some 90 si knuckles to accept my new axles because the STD kuckles will not

update 8/16/2007
On the 9th I made an order with http://www.acuraoemparts.com and was planning on doing my swap tomorrow which is the 17th.

They did not ship my parts till today and will not arrive till next thursday the 23rd

I installed the flywheel, clutch, pressure plate and took some pictures
forgive my ghetto engine stand

I just thought this next picture looked good

update 8/23/07

I finally got my order from Acura today

take a look:

I also picked up a 50mm hex tool to remove the crankshaft pulley and a 32mm socket for my axles:

update 8/27/07
I finally started the swap today. I wasn't able to snap pics of the progress because I did not have my camera with me
It's ok though, My brother brought his camera and snapped some pictures.

They show the progress of 6 hours worth of work:

I worked by myself for the most part, but a special thanks goes out to john(the guy in the glasses) for helping me out in the latter part of the day.
[I'm the one sitting]

all of the shots are about the same since they were taken at the same time

you can see in the picture why I did not do the swap inside of the garage(no room)

this is my b18b wishing it was ready to be put in:

as you can see... no was used for this swap.
tomorrow I am going to swap the harness from the old engine and then bolt it up. I am going to try to get as much done as possible.

update 8/28/2007

Today I swapped the harness from the d15b1 to the b18b.
I had to extend a few plugs, but it was pretty simple for the most part.

onto the pics:

empty engine bay with rear transmission mount in place

here is the engine with the harness swapped over and all wires extended.

dented my frame for alternator clearance:

in the process of dropping the car onto the engine:

here I am putting on the timing side mount:

this was honestly the highlight of my day:

and here it is... the engine is cleaner than the bay

I still need to finish up all of the wiring, shift linkage, knuckles....ECU wiring and various other deeds.

update 8/29/2007
I got the rear mount in and installed the shift linkage and a few various things

this picture makes me wonder why it didn't come from Honda like this...*sigh*

update 8/30/2007
today I finished up the wiring from DPFI to MPFI

it did not help that it's triple digits outside

update 9/01/2007
I spent my Friday finishing up my swap...(8/31/2007)

adding fluids....almost ready!

11:20 PM ... engine starts for the first time.

here is the alternator spinning!

Here is a before shot:

and here is the finished product:

I still need to put on the heat shield. Also, I had an old cold air intake that I modified to use for the time being.

The idle is a little off.
I still need to adjust my TPS with a multimeter in the morning. I hope that solves the idle issue... If not, I will spend tomorrow trouble shooting.

Thanks man. It would have been easier if mine already came with a swap, but I wanted to start with a car that was stock and seemingly unmolested and go from there however I desire

Good job so far. Wish I would have planned a bit better when I did my swap.

Good luck with a smooth install.

Looks like someone did their homework before they started. I hope I remember to do the same thing when I get home and not get complacent when I get my engine delivered..do you have expirence in this sorta thing? The wiring looks beautiful IMO

Thanks. Planning as much as possible has given me a lot of confidence, so lets hope all goes well!

thank you..This is what I fear most. I do not want to run into any complications when I actually do the swap. I want my car in and out of the garage as fast as possible.

yea man.. lets just say I am one of the few people who has taken full advantage of the search function. I have searched and searched and searched some more.
Besides changing my brakes and springs in the past, I do not have much experience with this sort of thing. To be honest, I have never even been in a car with anything larger than a d-series so the outcome will be a complete surprise to me.
Thank you very much on the wiring. I am trying to make it as clean as possible

did you not resurface your flywheel?

I am not too worried about it. I have read a few people having problems with stage 1 and stage 2, but a lot of people have good things to say about stage 3.
plus on ebay gripforce-clutches (the guys who sell the F1 raching clutches) have 100% positive feedback with over 25 thousand sales.
If I do end up having a problem with it, I am not too worried because their warehouse is next door to my friend's work in Brea so I can just go down and talk to them.

I went to the junkyard today and picked up an exhaust manifold from a 90 intergra...

I couldn't find a downpipe for the b18b exhaust manifold and I already had one to mate to the 90 integra so it should work out fine

I left my camera in my friends car so I don't have a picture of the exhaust manifold, but I painted the heatshield with some high temp rustoleum. It looks great IMO
