Icon6 CRX si w/ b17a1 questions

Hello all,

I'm new to the Honda community, but have always been very interested in Honda's. I just bought my first Honda today. It is a 1991 Honda CRX Si w/ b17a1 engine, with a Ys1 transmission.

My first question, is the YS1 also from the integra GS-R?

The motor is misfiring really bad right now. I am hoping it is a timing issue or something to that extent. I am going to do a compression test to all the cylinders tomorrow, and also try to adjust the timing.

When the car is running, it idles very low and sounds like it is running off like 2 cylinders or something..again I will try to determine this tomorrow. Anyway, it smells like fuel when it is running and you can tell its not burning all the fuel because it smokes a bit. It does not smell like burning oil or antifreeze. That is why I bought the car..I am hoping it is just a fuel, timing, or spark issue.

Do you guys have any suggestions for me to try?

The guy I bought the car from really had no idea how to work on cars so I was hoping I would come out with a nice car for cheap if I could fix it.

He put a full exhaust on it all new header back because it was loud. Then he said after that he ran out of money and did not want to spend anymore on it so I bought if for $1,750. The body is in fair condition with no rust, which also attracted me because I live in Chicago area and all CRXs that came from here are really rusted out bad and this one has absolutely none. I plan to only drive this car in the summer.

If you guys need anymore information, please do ask! I hope to have a pretty quick CRX running soon!

In the future I may turbo it, but that is if I can get the car running good LOL!

Thanks,

Rob

do you have any check engine lights?

yeah check your timing,
what ecu are you useing? stock, chipped?
what kinda fuel injetors are you useing? stock?
some times check your fuel rail cap/nut (sometime they go bad on the older cars)

but shounds more like your timing.
and your dizzy cap, roter wires and plugs,

and see where your compresson is.
and what color is the smoke (when you say it smokes a little.?)

good luck,
god bless...

if your car is obd-0 it should be useing a pr3 or pw0 ecu.
and it is located under the carpet under your glovebox.

thanks a lot for the response! I don't if the check engine light is on because I haven't even started the car myself lol. I will check tomorrow, and let you know what ecu it is using..I don't know very much about this car yet, I just bought it today. I am very excited to get it running correctly and driving down the road!

I'm not sure what obd it is, but the car is a '91 and I believe the motor is either a '92 or '93 from a GS-R since its a b17a1, says it right on the block. YS1 trans...which is also from a '92-'93 teg I found out..and I hear it is a good transmission. I'm really liking this swap, just need to get it running right..

the smoke is grayish I'd say, haven't really paid too much attention yet. I know it smells like gas though that's for sure!

I'm going to check the compression and timing tomorrow..can you give me some estimates where the compression should be? I've never adjusted timing before either, so any help there would be appreciated! I do have the tools needed to do the tests and adjustments, just need the know how!

The B17 has fairly low compression, so don't expect the numbers to be really high, you just want them to be about the same across the cylinders.

You'll need a timing light, I think base timing is 18*

wow thanks a lot guys. that will put me off to a good start. and I do have an acron timing light with a dial on it. I'll see if 18 degrees gets the motor idling right.

make sure you time it on the red mark on your pully,
there will be 3 lines next to each other and 1 line like 1" away to the right,
the red one is in the center of the 3 lines.
time it off that mark.

yes, i also noticed that the VTEC solenoid is disconnected? there are a few wires not hooked up, like the fan as well? can you please help me get this car running? I can buy another ECU and wire harness if I have to!

look at these pics...

I also have a crappy quality video of how the car is running, I forgot to switch my camera phone back to high resolution for saving to the SD card..but check this evidence out...I will get a better quality video if needed.

I am holding the wire that is coming out of what I believe to be the VTEC solenoid.

ECU

wiring to the ECU

more wires...lol

wiring to the fan on the radiator..can you tell me if this is the ground or live wire?

If someone could point me into the direction on where to get wire diagrams, it would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! or ECU, wire harness, and VTEC controller if I need one!

VIDEO:

I hope this helps!!!

Thanks for all the help, I wouldn't have got this far without you guys!

I don't know if I am typing in the wrong keywords or what, but I could really use a wiring diagram for the PK2 ECU, and 1991 Honda CRX Si...

sorry i'm kinda freaking out here haha..if I have to replace my ECU, I want to get one JDM chipped if possible, if it will make a difference. I want to go big If I have to replace it. so basically i'm looking for my options at this point. maybe something that will fit those connectors already for my current ECU. I would rather not have to re-wire the whole car.

thanks
