Default CRX cluster wiring - WTF

So I used the 88-89 pinouts from http://hondaswap.com/civic-crx-ew/cl...pinout-112968/ which are the same ones posted on various forums yet discovered that my 89 CRX Si cluster seems to be completely different. It is for sure an 89 cluster not a 90-91. The fuel gauge is hooked up on #3 instead of the temp, and the temp was wired up to #12 which supposedly is unused. Now, the fuel gauge did work and the temp gauge SOMETIMES worked as the needle would randomly peg at the top and stay there until I hit a bump. I've concluded that there probably is a short in the cluster causing my temp gauge issue, but does anyone know why this would be wired so differently?

I've encountered a few interesting things on this car, like the handful of tiny metal washers that fell out of the door when I took the panel off.... I have had problems with the wiring breaking in a few places but I don't see how this can even work. I verified with a multimeter that the temp sensor does infact go to the #12 spot on the cluster plug, and that the fuel gauge was on #3 (clipped the wire, no more fuel). In addition to the wires all over the place, the cluster itself would have to be wrong. I'm hitting the wreckers tomorrow for some spare cluster plugs to mess with and maybe a whole cluster if I get lucky.

Yeah, good luck. I got my old hatch at night, didnt even really look at the bay. Check it out in the morning and saw mass wires everywhere.

Well I lucked out today getting an 88-89 cluster from the wreckers. I think I'll just reverse the changes I did on the wires and try hooking it up as is, then go from there getting each gauge to work.

What the hell, this cluster is totally different on the back. Does anyone have a cross reference guide for the part numbers? Google brings up pretty much nothing. Both clusters say 78100 SH3 C000. Old one also says 257800-3031, new one says HR06857
