Default CRX B16A1 hesitation/miss after warm-up

Yes, yes I know it's probably covered in an FAQ somewhere but I looked, a LOT and didn't find it. I have an 89 EDM Rex with a B16A1. It runs BEAUTIFUL when it's cold but once it's warmed up, it has a hesitation/miss that is just annoying as HELL! I've swapped plugs, an O2 sensor and am about to swap the TPS but I'm sick of throwing parts at it. It idles perfect as well but the hesitation/miss happens after a little bit of throttle and at almost all RPM's, even in VTEC. It seems like flooring it pulls it out of it but not immediately it takes a second or two. Oh yeah, NO CODES either.

Has anyone else encountered this and if so, what did you do to fix it?

Did you do the swap? Is it a new problem or has it been like that since you got the motor in? Real EDM or just some EDM parts? Are you running both O2 sensors

Yes, I did do the swap and the problems been there since I got it in. It is a real EDM, I am military stationed in Germany and it was bought here and has been here since. I am running both sensors.

I don't know if you would run into the same problem on an EDM car but as far as the North American cars go --

- the stock d-series wiring harness has a single O2 sensor plug on it
- the B16a has two O2 sensors (obviously)
- the d-series harness O2 sensor plug will plug into ONE of the O2 sensors, it will not plug into the other.
- The one that it plugs into is the wrong one.
- the harness must be modified to switch the O2 sensor plugs.
- Once you have cut, switched and soldered them, you need to reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery.
- this problem, most of the time, will not throw a code.

The usual symptoms of backwards wired O2 sensors are hesitation and stuttering during partial throttle and while driving at a steady speed. It should run perfectly fine while idling and at full throttle. I hope this is your problem as it only takes 5 minutes and some solder to fix. Good luck.

Hmm, the thing is I used my the harness that came off the old motor (a ZC) and it had two sensors. I got an entire engine, trans, ECU, axles, etc... everything really. I'll try swapping them though, even though the plugs don't interchange. I sure hope it's that simple...

It's pretty straightforward, you shouldn't have a problem.

If you have a stock exhaust manifold, you will be able to see both your O2 sensors, just look between your engine and radiator. They are both single wire, so there is no wiring confusion.

Just cut both the wires at the same point, strip the ends and twist them onto each other so that the wire originally leading to O2 sensor #1, now leads to O2 sensor #2, and the wire originally leading to O2 sensor #2 now leads to O2 sensor #1. Cover the twisted ends with electrical tape (don't worry, this is temporary).

Now, disconnect your battery to reset your ECU. Take the car out for a spin to see if this has fixed the problem. Make sure that the car is at operating temperature when testing.

If the problem is fixed, take off the electrical tape, slide on a piece of shrink tubing, solder up the connection, shrink the tubing over it and you are good to go.

I hope this helps, it is the best I can do without pictures.

so im supposed to reverse the order of the plugs or splice both of them into one? this is why i hate wiring

I wondering if swapping the pins on the ECU would be easier? I can find multiple pics of the ECU wiring for a B16 but none for a ZC. I'm going to just try and swap the wires as they're shown on the B16 ECU and see what happens.

Yep, that will work. In fact it will be easier as well.

If you read my post it's pretty clear. I wouldn't even consider this to be "wiring" because all you are doing is:

Each O2 sensor is responsible for adjusting the air fuel ratio that goes into two cylinders (to a degree).
When you have them hooked up backwards, they are reading the exhaust of two cylinders, but adjusting the fuel air ratio for the other two. This means that if one reads a bit rich, it will lean up the wrong two cylinders and when the O2 that is hooked up to those two sees lean, it adds more fuel to the other two. In effect, two of your cylinders were running lean and two were running rich.
Glad to hear your car is fixed.

No, if you read any of my posts, it's very clear that you can't(unless you don't mind driving a car that runs like ****). Read the threads and you'll know why.

Yes, for a 1st gen B16 to run properly, you need two O2 sensors.

That is a 2nd gen valve cover, but they are interchangable -- what colour are the plugs on your distributor? Grey is OBD1 and white is OBD0.

my honda crx b16a1 dohc vtec bucks and hesitates and runs very lean...if we chip and the chip disables the O2 sensors will it run smoother and stop bucking? and go back to a normal idle instead of running lean..i am thinking of using a spoon chip and socket..will this work...any suggestions?

i have the same problem with a d16a8 ... it was goind perfect till a friend of mine had an accident with it ... after i changed the oil pan and put the oil in the engine, i started it up and it goes horrible ever since ... the ecu is chipped and the o2 sensor is disabled ... the car sometimes has moments when it works just fine ... but once it's wormed up ... i can hardly push on the gas ... is chokes horribly(even at idle rpm) ... i changed a lot of things ... throttlebody+tps ... ecu.. distributor+spark plugs ... checked the injectors(work fine).. compresion test 10.9-11.1 all 4 pistons + a lot of other things ... if anyone has any other idea ... i have another 2 cars from witch i can change parts between them .. sorry if my spelling is bad... any ideea is welcomed.. thanks. Alex.
P.S sorry for posting in an old topic ... maybe someone came up with a solution for this problem ... thanks
