Default Changing Automatic shift cable on 91 DX

I'm having issues with my 91 civic hatchback with the 1.5L and automatic trans (L4).

The car will not shift of of Drive. I can move the shift lever into Park, Reverse, Neutral, and it still stays in Drive. I don't suspect the transmission because when in Drive, it upshifts and downshifts without issue. Fluid looks good. So far I've adjusted the cable shorter and longer with no effect. When I remove the aluminum cover where the cable enters the transmission, I can move the cable in and out to shift it into Reverse.

This leads me to believe either the cable is binding in the tubing or it is broken. Has anyone changed the cable on an automatic? I've got the connection at the shifter disconnected, the connections to the car, but I'm not sure how to disconnect from the transmission. I can see inside to the connection once the aluminum cover is removed, but I'm not sure how to get access to the connection in the transmission.
