Default bumper supports weigh a lot ...

ok guys, I just got a new bumper because mine was wrecked up and unaligned ... the civic that I took it off of this thing weights a good 50 lbs of steel on the bumper

i read somewhere that is only protects you from like 1-5 mph collisions, would you say to keep it or let it go?

does it serve any other purpose? it sounds to me like a waste of weight

I am ditching mine when I get my car painted. I do so much highway driving that any collision that I will most likely have will be at 55+mph.

Yeah, it is how the bumber is bolted up on the hatch as well. I left mine on. If you get rear-ended by some idiot, your car will most likely hit the car in front of you...

Regardless of if it's a 5mph wreck or something bigger, it's still more steel between you and the other car. I say keep it.

when i wrecked my crx, if it werent for that front bumper support my whole front would have been smashed, 50 lbs.'s or not, if you wreck going whatever speed its gonna help some, i was going about 20 when i hit and it barely even dented it in the middle. by the way it is made of ultra high strength steel KEEP THAT ****!!

It probably would help you going 100mph then it would without it. It just probably doesn't hold shape after 5mph, but more can help you.

I feel sorry for you if you get into an accident. And it should stiffen your frame also so I think it would help overall.

It's kinda like saying," why would I need a helmet if it brakes on impact anyway" because helmets usually do and that is how it is designed.

Also when riding without mine I noticed the steering was sloppy and when I turned it felt real loose. I don't know about 50lbs, but it's more like 10-20lbs like the other guy said... Hit the gym!!!

on and 88-91 crx, the SI bumper beams weight 20lbs each. I have two sets, one set from an 89 SI and one set from a 91 SI. All 4 weight exactly 20lbs each.

They weight about 20 each, I've taken it off and they're not that heavy.

Not 50 pounds.

I have a 89 crx si and I replaced my bumper after a small accident with a 90 hf's bumper cover and bumper support....its quite a bit lighter then the stock one....the "2.5 mph" bumper it is. I like the weight reduction. Anything I can do to keep the beefiness down.

Well like quite few people already said I would keep it on. OK so even "IF" it only works to like 5mph what if you werent paying attention and you accidently rolled into the car in front of you and say it was a truck with a trailor hitch well there goes quite a bit of damage and money just to save a little weight.....So not only will it same you on repair charges in a slow collision but it could also save your life. I mean just think going like 55-65 mph and hitting someone thats like someone said above less inbetween you and that car and not only that it a lot more likely to push your motor into the firewall and could end up crushing you.....just my $.02

well i kept it on, but now the problem is my bumper isnt lining up correctly with my corner light / headlights!

i did exaggerate a little bti, but for real i think it is stupid... bumper is only hit in head ons and rear end collisions

head on you will almost die anyways if your going that fast, then rear end is usually light probably not going to cause damage

Their are probably some liabilty issues involved, if you or a friend were injured. The insurance companies well do/say anything to get out of paying a claim... hehehe

I've been rear-ended twice in my hatch, both times felt pretty hard (one time even gave my ex-wife whiplash ) But both times I got out of the car, and went to the back to survey the damage, and to my suprise there was hardly a scratch!! I'm sure that without the bumper suports the back end would have sustained enough damage to consider the car totalled. And if the other guy's Insurance company discovered that I had removed the bumper suports, they may have decided to not pay up. I'm keeping mine in!!!

i say if your going to keep it on the streets then keep the bumper...i took mine out but my car sees more track time then it does street time...they dont weigh 50lbs like everyone thinks...more like 25-30lbsif you take off both rear and front maybe 50lbs all together...and yes it does hold up the front bumper...my bumper is all ghetto zip tied to my car

Yes, it holds the bumper up. It will still hold up, but it won't be of perfect shape and will sag if you remove it. I removed mine to replace the bumper cover once, and it does seam heavy, but like everyone said, you'd want it if you were in a collision. Little redlight tap could cost you a radiator support..

I plan on removing mine as soon as my car is track only! but not until then of course..

I dunno about EF's, but for DA's, the JDM bumper supports weigh MUCH less. Seeing as EF's have en entirely different front end, the mod obviously wouldn't be as cheap and easy...

Again, to clear up any confusion, that is for the DA. The pic was taken from http://battlecat.8m.com/JDM%20front%...%20support.htm
