UTI is good, but unfortunately they spend 3/4 of their money on advertising. The good thing, though I'm sure other schools do this too, is that they take a year off your wait for your ASE certification.

If you do go to UTI, go to the phoenix campus, it's the only one that offers a degree.

I went into the airforce for 4 years, went to shcool for "jet engines" basically, got a college degree while in there for free, saved up all the money from living on the base and being frugal..now im working on jet engines as a civilian, used the saved money as a down payment on a house..

these uti and wyotech type shcools charge 30k and you come out as a lube tech or working at pepboys........doesnt seem worth it to me

then go to your local honda dealership and apply to be a lube tech...work from the bottom up..you'll be doing oil changes for a while,,then if you're doing good go talk to the boss and see if they'll sponsor you for pact..

A friend of mine is a lube tech at American Toyota here in ABQ and next summer they're paying full tuition for him to go to school.

If you're gonna go to the Phoenix UTI though, hit me up, I'm looking for roommates for a house out there. Though I actually prefer going to the Houston campus.

i used to work at mckenna audi and most of the newer guys there were uti graduates and all of them regret going there. not worth the money spent.

they came out of there and had to start from the bottom.

Im currently going to a public tech school about 15 minutes from my house. Thought about UTI in high school but just too expensive. Ive learned more at my first year than i did throughout all of high school combined.

IMO doesnt really matter what school you go to, It just all depends how much you put into it and how much you want out of it.

I was probably the least educated and youngest kid in the class of about 20. Some of them were already in the field and went to school to get there ASE certification because they failed the tests too many times. Hell Id never heard of wheel bearings before i entered the school.

Im now currently working at tires plus as a lube tech. Mainly because i dont have the tools there to do anything else. If you show your boss that you know what you are doing and have the comitment to move up then it will happen. But I just dont have the experience to do half the stuff the mechanics do, which is why im a lube tech.

Sadly, all of the mechanics at my work never went to school beyond high school. They just have the experience from watching other techs throughout their career

I would have to agree with Bjorn... I personally went to UTI for about 3 months. The only reason i didnt finish it is because I really could not see myself working on other peoples cars for the rest of my life. I love working on my own car, but thats about it. Im actually a Service Advisor now at a Nissan dealership.
However, my best friend also went to UTI and when he graduated from the Volvo program, he immediately got a job at a Volvo dealer, and he started out at like 15 or 16 an hour... Basically, you get out of it what you put into it.

Back when i worked for the local ford dealership they sent me to Guilford tech CC for the ford asset program. It was a two year course where you studied a certain area for two months then you went back to your dealership and worked with the guy specializing in that area for two months. Then it was back to school to move on to a different area. I liked the program and the way it was ran. The only thing i didnt like was the fact that i worked at a super small dealership which made the intern part of it a little less than desirable but the program was great. Plus the cost was ended up being like 500 or 600 a semester. Standard community college tuition and you received an associates upon finishing. I dont know of what other companies offer a program like this but we had ford asset and chevy asep programs at that school. just a lil food for thought on picking a school.

exactly, i honestly hate working on other peoples ****. Ive only been in the industry for a little over a year and im already getting tired of touching other peoples cars.

Before you pay the tuition for UTI/Wyotech/Dunwoody, think real hard about it if its realllllly what you wanna do for the next 20+ years. Do you honestly wanna pay that kinda cash for something you will get sick of in a couple years? I mean If you really want to be a mechanic then yea go for it.

One of the reasons i considered those schools was so i wouldnt have to go to the gay math/reading/english/phyc classes. Your going to forget all of that **** within a year anyway.... So why spend another grand on classes + books for **** that you will never use again? The math i can understand since you need to do math (brakes for example, measuring rotors/drums with micrometers) but do you honestly need to know all about shakespear?

Stay away, stay far, far away. I have heard of way too many horror stories of people being unemployed and 30K in debt after going to UTI or Wyotech. The problem lies in supply and demand. There are simply too many auto mechanics around nowadays (at least this is what I've always been told), and not enough jobs.

I suggest that you start off at a local community or tech school like other people have suggested and maybe even consider doing diesel engine repair, there's good demand for diesel technicians.

I guess it depends on your plans. Do you want to go to tech school simply so you can work on your own car or one specific make or do you really want to have a career as a mechanic?

hey check into baran institute its in ct so not too far from you. i have to agree greatly that you get out what you put in to it. you must apply yourself to learn anything and you can get a decent job out of a school but many do not because they did not apply themselves and dont know any more then when they went in
